Re: [diesel_mercedes] Oh No ! (here We Go Again)

Nate,

    We could go to Long Beach in the morning.  In the afternoon, while it is hot outside, maybe you could supervise me in the shady garage and make sure that I don't get the wrong wire on the wrong spark plug on the Caddy.

    I've looked at both the HBOL and the Chilton's book.  Both of them show that Cadillac changes the rotation of the distributor every year or two.  So it looks as if the cable hold down ring that I so carefully sneaked out of the yard has the numbers for a counterclockwise year, and my engine is a clockwise one.

    So much for having the molded in cylinder numbers.

    It's just after 10:00 now and I'm heading to bed.  So I'll be up reasonably early.

Tam

The car seems to run fine but I always worry about those damn fungus bits , maybe Tom and I will go to Long beach Pick-A-Part to-morrow worning and pass by West Marine where i'll buy yet another gallon jug of Startron by starbright .

Somebody (maybe diesel giant) offers a sleeve kit for repairing the
connector with a metal insert. I was going to repair mine with a metal
tube I had but eventually just ordered a new one from Auto Haus Arizona
for about $187. When mine broke, it left enough of a stub to get a hose
clamp on.

[diesel_mercedes] It's TURBO TIME !

Yesterday my Son came by the house to lend me a hand and told me my Mercedes' exhaust is smoking white/blue pretty much constantly , it's only a thin stream , this usually indicates the turbo seals are gone , some here may remember the car came to me with a siezed turbo I was able to un stick and coax back into life .

Last summer his work buddy gave me a milke crate full of old Mercedes Diesel parts including a turbo , if I can find wherever I stored it , I'll install it and see if my engine smokes less .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : Those plastic top radiators.

Brian keeps a 2" or 3" copper pipe in each car which can be used for emergency purposes to repair the break and get you another 50,000 miles. I now have 83C and 175F radiators and smile on hot days. Hooray for MB coolant, Water Wetter, and cleaning the crud out  every two years.

Well Rob ;

The simple fact is :

Germans apparently developed bio - degradable plastics and many engines have been ruined when the plastic radiator's top hose connector simply snapped off without any warning....

This occurred to my Coupe twice , different cars each time , I gave the radiators to Brian who repaired them but last I heard , he was unable to get anyone else to use them...

I willingly spent $5Kon my rebuilt engine , I'd be a trifle upset if my $250 radiator caused a repeat .

[diesel_mercedes] Radiator Choices

OR ;

You could have called 1-800-radiator and they'd have sold you an all brass radiator made in Taiwan ~ it's cheesy but it works after some fiddling during the installation .

-Nate
Jim Wrote :

So then, based on this info, if it were mine, I'd swap out the radiator with a
Nissens plastic top, swap out the thermostat and water pump, and citrus flush
the engine when I had it apart. And put new belts on it before I put it back
together. One Saturday and $500 with enough money left over for a six-pack.

The reason that my rad failed was the plastic input nipple had become brittle and failed. A copper header would not have failed. But I agree, mine was probably almost 30 yrs old when it failed.
