Re: [diesel_mercedes] 1980 300sd will not turn over after short/long drive

You might want to look for plugs in the vacuum shutoff lines. If the key switch does not allow atmospheric air to get back into the shutoff diaphragm it could cause failure to start after being shut off. Then over time a slow leak through the blockage allows the diaphragm to release and then it starts again.

If you want to hear a good story about just such a thing read on.

Last December I found a guy selling a 78 240, 184K on the clock for $200.00. It was for my Jeep CJ7. It came with a 4 speed manny tranny, I think Jeeps should have 4 bangers and manual transmissions and even if I could only get the transmission it would be worth the price. I mention that because the seller said several people came to look at it and tried to start it and one almost succeeded. But no one actually got it to start. I bought it for the transmission. Then while trying to get it to start I looked under the dash by the switch and noticed that they sellers son, whose car it was, had replaced the shutoff valve on the key switch with a simple 1/4 quarter turn valve. I got under the hood and disconnected the hose from the vacuum diaphragm and heard a light but noticeable sucking whoosh sound. Guess what I was thinking, I heated the plugs and it fired right up. After 30 seconds it was so smooth you could balance a nickel on its edge on the rocker cover.

And so I say - check the shutoff circuit.  It would be fun for me if I was right. Just disconnect the diaphragm hose next time it won't start. Best to do that at the diaphragm nipple.

Good luck.

One of my cars did this, I had no time to deal with it so it just sat, after a while I tried it and it started, been working ever since. Gotta love old cars. Max

We recently acquired a 1980 300sd with about 125k miles on the clock. First time out, we drove about 20 miles to town to get new tires. When the tech tried to start the car, nothing happened. No start, no turn over, no click. Nothing. Tried jumping. Nothing. Personnel pushed the car inside and put on new tires. Pushed car out. Contacted po and was told that the same thing had happened a couple of time in the past. Po said he thought it might be neutral safety switch. Car started after moving gear shift thru the gears several times. Ordered new switch. New switch came yesterday. No time to put it on. Drove car to town today and after refueling it would not start. Moved thru the gears many many time. No start. After several hours returned and the car started right up. Sounds  like something electrical is heating up and not working. Does the neutral safety switch have any electronics inside? Could the started/solenoid be getting hot from driving? In the morning I am going to put the new switch on and see what happens. Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated. I will post what happens after new switch and driving.
