Too late.  Mines already all tore apart.  I've completely stripped down this engine to the block and head.  Every bit of hardware (nuts, bolts, washers, fuel lines, transmission cooler lines, hoses and tubing, those lever clips that hold down the air filter housing lid) are off to the metal finisher to be recoated in zinc.  The turbo's also apart to get it's hardware in the lot, too, as are various Jeep bits (starter and horn relay, hood prop, heater control valve, hose clamps, bolts and screws that hold down the vacuum, windshield and overflow reservoirs, motor and crossmember bolts, etc), as well as all the transmission and transfer case nuts, bolts, levers....

I get charged by the lot; it doesn't matter how many pieces are in the lot, so I try to load them up as much as possible.  This job is in two lots; one to be coated in yellow, the other clear coated (that silvery-steel color).

Yesterday was mostly getting the Rocket 3 ready for the annual Conclave next Sunday, but I did manage to strip the painted parts for the Mercedes engine (air filter housing, pulleys, vibration dampner, water pump).  Now, they're ready to paint.  I still need to scrape all the gunk and peeling paint off the engine and head, then degrease.  Then, it will be ready for painting.

_Before_ you take it all apart, get out your Mity-Vac tool and vacuum test both the waste gate and ALDA ~ both had vacuum leaks on my Coupe so no wonder I've been having endless problems ~ things I didn't know to test were wonky .

Interesting that all this turbo talk comes up just as I'm about to rebuild the one for the engine going into the Wagoneer.  On Friday, I ordered both the rebuild kit and the new, balanced shaft from Bergsma (yeah, $$$!!); they should be here by the end of the week.  I am most certainly going to go over the wastegate with the eye to increase the boost just ever so much when I re-assemble the turbo.

Right now, I'm mostly waiting for all the hardware (nuts, bolts, hoses, tubes, bracketry, etc.) to come back from the metal finisher.  In the meantime, I'm cleaning, stripping and painting the block/head, pulleys, air filter housing, and other assorted and sundry iron and steel bits, in preparation for the big install.

[diesel_mercedes] Wastegate Service

Thank you Alan ! .

That's a good idea .

Yes, the diaphragm is leaking so I don't see any point in external cleaning, I'm going to have to open 'er up and see what's what .

This may not be possible this week though .

Are you sure the diaphragm is leaking?  I had what appeared to be that problem.  It may be that the diaphragm is stuck open.  I set my air compressor at 10 psi and injected some ether into the waste gate hose and pulsed it with the air compressor.  After a few cycles, I could hear the diaphragm cycling.  I used ether because there is only a small drain hole on the front side of the  diaphragm and I didn't want to load it up with a penetrant that  might not drain out.  At least a good wet shot of ether will
disolvee crud and then evaporate.
