Re: [diesel_mercedes] Shimmies & Shakes

Nate,

I brought my car in last year for new lower ball joints, as I had some clunking et al, and the basic raise the tire and pry it up test showed loose ball joints.

The place I brought it found the drag link had started to separate at the pressed end. Not good; had them both done.

Much better now.

I had the rear springs replaced, years ago, and that dealt with the saggy rear.

Let us know how it goes.

I just placed the parts order with the Classic Center, it's a whole buncha stuff, the lower ball joint you replace and re use the control arm after installing new bushings where it attaches to the unibody (no frame on our cars) .

The upper control arm comes replete with new ball joint and inner bushings according to the EPC ~ you can buy it sans bushings buy why ? they'll need replacing anyway so might as well buy the entire thing in one go .

Some of the guys use S-Klasse inner control arm bushings for firmer control and ride but I'm getting older and slowing down (sad but true) and I'm sure the next guy who owns this old thing after me won't be driving it as hard as I do .

I also ordered in new track rod bushings and boots, that's most of the groaning noises I'm hearing, right under your foot on the back side of the toe board .

Mercedes uses seriously heavy coil springs, suitable for a one ton truck and they'll kill you if they get the chance, I don't have the correct coil spring compressor, it's something like $500 for the right one made in China, I really don't like fooling with them nor McPherson struts after a VW Mechanic wasn't careful and had one go in his stomach and out his back, splattering his spine all over the shop wall Emoji .

I already have chronic pain and have to sleep in a chair so my buddy Carl says he'll do it, he has the correct factory tools and just did one a week ago so he should be sharp on the details .
