[diesel_mercedes] My OM161 powered Jeep needs an IP

 

At least I think it does. It still has a lope and it is still the #4 hole. But with very even compression and injector swapping not moving the problem, I have no choice but to look at the pump. So does anyone here have a known good working injection pump for a 1980 240D for sale.

Not really. regenerative braking doesn't work well at slow speeds. And the slower you go the less you generate so you can't come to a complete stop - ever. Try to stop with only regen braking on a hill and there will be a new meaning to bumper to bumper traffic. Friction brakes are here to stay.

I would think that it would be possible to totally eliminate conventional brakes on electric cars by using regenerative braking similar to the technology used in my radio controlled car?  With brushless electric motors, that would make the drivetrain virtually maintenance-free!

I can only tell you my experience. I get a lot of free charges. I have 2.4 kw of solar on my roof. We figured we paid 900 dollars in three years for 39k miles of driving. Mostly for fast chargers and charging at home. We have free charging at our place of work provided by Adobe. So we go to work at 6:30 ish, out by 10:15 ish. Just enough time for a full charge to go back home to San Francisco. Even if we used the dirtiest electricity we are still the cleanest form of transport other than electric trains. So much solar in Hawaii they stopped issuing permits. You should see wind power in California. Very big and growing. Really helps local smog. If they stopped pumping, transporting, refining, transporting again we would have plenty of energy for alternative energy. No more smog. No more wrenching, well much less..bearings, brakes and tires mostly. So the math is
done. Just have to follow the equation. Or not. My project vehicle is a tandem recumbent trike with a solar panel on top...have to start somewhere. Lawrence Rhodes

Well . . .

As long as you brought it up let's do some more math. The Sun deposits 1.5 kW / square meter on the earth. Most of that is unconvertible into electricity. Of that which is, the greatest part is infrared, visible and UV. The microwaves and alpha particles are not very useful. But if all of it was directly convertible into energy (and we, as a race, were stupid enough to try to do that), first we would be walking in the dark, second we would freeze to death in days, third all plant life would be dead in a week. But we can't convert it all into electricity. Solar is the best we can do with UV. Wind is the best we can do with IR - yes wind is a function of uneven heating which is a result of the absorption of infrared photons by the dirt. Wind is a great backup when it is available at the right times. But it is not a steady state solution and will never produce enough simply because it depends on the sun and the sun does not deposit enough TOTAL energy to meet our demands.  Visible light is of too short a wavelength to heat us and of too low energy to emancipate electrons from semiconductor crystals. In other words, we simply use vastly more than the sun deposits. Nuclear is the only REAL option we have and if they built and used Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors there would be no more Chernobyl like incidents. At the very least, they could use liquid salts at atmospheric pressures to extract the heat instead of high pressure water. But that is only half a great solution.

Getting free charges like you do is good for you - and maybe another 0.5% of the population. But we most certainly could not all do it. Again, I am glad the math works out for you. But it is myopic to say that it is a solution for everyone. And until we stop letting the current profiteers of the nuclear and coal industries keep us from building LFTRs, we will be left without choice but to draw on the deposits of unused sunlight from millennia past in the forms of coal and oil.

That's the real math.
