Re: [diesel_mercedes] OM617 IP Removal

I see your point Mark ;

I'm sure I've forgotten the details, I do remember it was a PIA .

I really dislike removing the oil filter housing .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] OM617 IP Removal

After a texting driver ripped up the front of my '84 300D, I tried to remove the pump, but the allen head screws on the filter stripped, and I could not figure an alternative way to loosen them.  While there weren't any problems with the pump, I figured that at close to 300M miles it wasn't worth going further.  My '85 SD has about 260M and my '83 300D has almost hit 97M, so I'm hoping problems with the injection pumps won't raise their ugly heads anytime soon.

Well, the problem I had was not getting to all the nuts 'n bolts, but getting the nose of the IP to clear the engine block where it's mounted.  The less-than-1-inch space between the back of the pump and the filter housing is just not enough. My procedure was like this (specifically, between 5:00 and 6:00):

The next time one of you wizards pull a pump, please record it and post it to youtube.  I'd love to see how it's done.
