Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: No start again

Thanks. Seems to be going now. But I am going to take a look at those videos that looks like a great reference.

Nate of "black fungal goop" fame will respond to this. He enjoys talking about fuel tanks, the tank filter, and fuel line going from the tank to the engine. Also, Mercedes Source has some videos on dropping the tank filters to check on such problems.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Those Old Chryslers !

6-volts in 1964?  Some military requirement??  Bill

I'd not allow that damnfool to check my oil .

Neat that anyone still cares to use those wonderful old engines .

When I was @ L.A.P.D. Air Support , we had 1964 Bell 203 helicopters , just a few left and I went digging 'round in our large piles of spare parts from the U.S. Army , who'd also supplied us our birds .

I found two trailer mounted starting carts , built in 1964 , powered by Chrysler 331 C.I.D. Hemi V-8 engines , 6 volts .

I was able to get them running , they had *very* low hours and ran like new .

We sold them both for scrap metal a couple years later .

It's called " Burnishing " and the special files are called Burnishing Files , they're much finer than 600 grit .

In a pinch I'd use 1,000 grit but never anything coarser than that , certainly not 600 grit .

I get E-Bay or Amazon still has Burnishing files , I have some that are 50 + years old and they work fine .

I remember the old cars with contact points in the distributor.  those contacts has a special hard coating on them.  Filing with something coarse would grind off that coating and they would stop working quickly.  A very fine piece of sandpaper (about 600 grit) like auto body shops use was best. I always kept a piece in my glove compartment..  ALWAYS wipe the points clean with a piece of cloth afterwards so grit will not keep contacts from making contact.  Electronics suppliers sold special files for contact points back in the day (very fine grit).

Re: [diesel_mercedes] RE: No start again

At about 4 o'clock today when it was about 55 degrees in the garage it started up again and it has been running since. I didn't put the white bottle of diesel kleen last time and it was down below a quarter tank. When it stoped running it was about 20 degrees and had been sitting in 20 degree weather for about 6 hours. I don't know if this is another example of diesel fuel gelling or freezing or something but it is running now.

I had tried the red bottle diesel 911 but it didn't do any good. I also had put diesel heat in the tank before this happened. I hope I didn't cause any damage.

Thank you thank you for your help.

Mike ;

Before anything else , pump some alcohol through your primer pump to get 100 % of the water out as one tiny droplet will blow out your injectors .

I too am thinking either clogged vent in the fuel cap or clogged in tank intake screen .

How full is the tank ? .

How clean was the clear plastic intake screen before the primer pump ? .

We'll get you going but careful testing & diagnosis it this point is critical else you'll chase your tail .

Thursday night I had to get towed.  71 220D stopped running after 1 mile and will not start again.

Battery is new.  Fuel filter is new and prefilter is open. Car has sat in heated garage since and I have added 3 gallons of new fuel.

I removed the fuel pump and tested in a bucket of water and the primer pumped water in the bucket.

No fuel is coming to the engine when the bleeder screw is open.

I am thinking a blocked fuel line, not enough air in the tank but if anyone has any ideas please advise.  Thank you so much for your help.

[diesel_mercedes] Points Burnishing Files

Agreed but ;

In use it turns out that Tungsten coating is *very* durable so cleaning it on hard to find voltage regulators is an O.K. thing to do .

Brass contacts like in starter , headlight , window and glow plug relays , must _ALWAYS_ be hand polished using metal polish .

-Nate

Bill Wrote :

I am surprised that these files are still offered. I consider them temporary or stop-gap at best.

Points have a thin flash of tungsten, or similar material, that allows them to last longer. Once this is burnt off or filed off, they'll need regular cleaning with the file to keep operating.  Nate?   Bill in Oregon

Amazon carries these.  If you search for "point file" you will get lots of hits.  The least expensive (I think) is this:

(I was surprised that R ockauto did not have them.)

Boy howdy Bill :

Talk about ' ZOOM - ZOOM ! =8-) .

To - day no one cares about those 331 C.I.D. Hemi V-8's , espcially since they had the bell housing cast as part of the cylinder block but they were great .
