[diesel_mercedes] 240D : Death By Children

Presumably these was an automatic ? .

The automatic will up shift eventually saving the engine from revving itself to death .

I live in a College town and see the stupid brainless kiddies zooming along in second or third gear hard against the governor , hoping it'll maybe somehow go a *little* bit faster before they speed shift it to the next higher gear ~ looking under the hood _always_ shows fresh oil everywhere as they force it out of every joint .

Over speeding engines kills them , no way around that basic fact .

There's a world of difference between mindlessly over revving and engine and driving it hard to keep it clean .

My first diesel MB was a 1977 240D standard.
Had been used mainly in the city for 7 years by the previous owner.

When I bought it it was only running on 3 cylinders.
I removed the bad injector, it was seized, cleaned it with emmery cloth and then the engine ran alot better.
Still stalled at every light.
Was only able to get 60 miles per hour out of it.
I was told by the folks at MBZ.org to add a quart of 10w30 oil to my fuel and go on a long hard drive.
I did, I went from Vancouver to Kamloops, about a 3hr drive , the end bit is a highway climb mainly uphill.
In Kamloops it ran much better and only stalled a bit at lights.
On my way home, it was even better, the last leg to Vancouver is real flat.
A couple of trucks with a boat and jetski's flew by me, so I decided to see what she would do.
It had way more power, and topped out at about 92 MPH, the point where the governor stops further speed.
It didn't stall at lights anymore either.

The folks at MBZ had a saying about the old diesels, that I still remember.
"Drive it like you stole it"

I drove my 240D hard all the time, it seemed to run better all the time.
Hard driving removes the carbon and cleans the motor.
MB diesels have governors to stop us from breaking them.

I now have a 300D non turbo and I drive it hard too.
When I bought it I litteraly couldn't win a race with an old school VW beatle.
Now the car has alot of acceleration in comparison.

The old MB diesel's are perfect for the College boy.
They really don't have enough acceleration to get them in trouble.
If they do get in trouble, there is enough metal for them to probably servive.
The school kids actually think they look cool, ops BAD if they have low profile tires.

I have one for each of my boys.

That's kinda sorta good , I guess......

I think maybe getting her to wake up a bit before she killed herself or someone , would have been better but in the end it's all good .

One thing that amazes me is even a worn out Mercedes diesel still starts, maybe not on the first pop but  still will start. Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Stopped Again

They are not really this  slow. Max

I took a ride in my venerable old '83 Mercedes 240D last night!

I took a ride in my venerable old '83 Mercedes 240D last night. Two
point four litres of raw power, 4 cylinders of asphalt-tearing terror
with 67 rompin stompin horse power at my beck and call. It's stock,
all right, nothing done to it, but it pushes the 3200 pounds of German
engineering around with AUTHORITY. I'm always catching mopeds and
18-wheelers by surprise...

I was headed back from Baskin Robbins with my manly triple-latte
cappuccino blast ("No Cinnamon, ma'am, I take it BLACK"), when I
stopped at a streetlight. As the "D" rattled its throaty idle around
me, I sipped my bold beverage and wiped the white froth my stiff upper
lip. I was minding my own business, but then I heard a rev from the
next lane. I turned, made eye contact, then let my eyes trace over
the competition.

Geo Metro -- a late model, could be trouble. Low profile tires, curb
feelers, and schoolbus-yellow paint. Yep, a hot rod, for sure. The
howl of his motor snapped my reverie, and I looked back into the
driver's eyes, nodded, then blipped my own throttle (Rattle Rattle!!).
As I tugged on my driving gloves and slipped on my sunglasses (gotta
look cool to be fast, and I am *damn* cool, hence...), the night was
split with the sound of seven screaming cylinders... Then the light
turned...

I almost had him out of the hole, my four pounding cylinders thrusting
me at least a millimeter back into my seat, as smoke pouring from
exhaust pipe... I'd let it sit and idle too long! I saw in the
corner of my eyes, a yellow snout gaining, and I heard the roar of his
three cylinders. He slung by me, right front wheel juddering against
the pavement, and he flashed me a smile as his gasoline powered 1.1
liters of motor stretched its legs. I turned off my AC to gain 10%
more power and kept my foot gamely in it. Then I saw a glimpse of
chrome under his bumper, and knew the ugly truth... He was running a
custom exhaust -- probably a 1.5-into-1 dual exhaust... maybe even
cutouts! Damn his hot-rod soul! The old lady passing us on the
crosswalk cast a dirty look in our boy-racer direction... Yet still I
persisted, with my four pumping pistons singing a steady, deep, diesel
song, wound fully out. Though only a few handfuls of seconds had
passed, we were nearing the crosswalk at the other side of the
intersection, and I heard the note of his engine change as he made his
shift to second, and I saw his grin in his rearview mirror fade as he
missed the shift! I rocketed by! Not ready to give up so easily, he
left his foot in it, revving, and I heard one wheel *almost* chirp as
he finally found second and dropped the clutch. We careened over the
crosswalk, now going at least 15 miles per hour. A bicyclist passed
us, but intent on the race as we were, neither of us batted an eye. I
was waiting for the first dot on the speedometer to tell me to shift
(no tachometer here!). Shifting, I nursed the clutch gently to keep
from bogging, keeping my motor spinning hot and pulling me ahead, now
trailing a cloud of stinking clutch smoke, no that's diesel exhaust
again... He pulled slowly abreast of me, and neck and neck, I shifted
into third at 38 MPH - a little early, but better safe than sorry.
The scream of motors deafening all pedestrians within a five foot
circle. He nosed ahead as we passed 42 miles an hour, then eased in
front of me, taunting, as he shifted into fourth. I decided to keep
my car in third, counting on the ability to pump out the power at
higher speeds and lower gears. I was staring up the dual 6" chrome
tips of his exhaust, snarling, my cappuccino forgotten, as he lifted a
little to take the next corner. I saw my opportunity, and counting on
the innate agility of my trusty steed, I pulled wide into the number
two lane and kept my foot buried in carpet. Slowly, I inched around
him, feeling my German Diesel roll slowly to the left as I came
abreast in the midst of this gradual sweeping turn. I felt the front
start to push a little, so I added more power only to realize that was
all I had! But, I saw the right rear wheel lift on the Metro and
realized he had reached his limit! Slowly I gained on him through the
outside of the turn passing him with ease!!!

The Metro driver beat his wheel in rage as my car eased past him on
the outside, my P175/R14's screaming in protest, as we raced to the
next light. We coasted down, neck-and neck, to the red light. I
tightened my driving gloves, ready for another round, when this WIMP
in the next car meekly flipped his turn signal and made a right. MB
superiority reigns!!!

I drove off sipping my masculine drink, awash in my sheer virility,
looking for other unwitting targets.... Perhaps a Yugo, or maybe even
a Volkswagon Van!

RE: [diesel_mercedes] a little interim off topic help

I googled the key words in your problem:

2001 Suburban water rushing around in cabin of truck... You can hear it moving around after it has been sitting for awhile (partiucularly over night)... It appears to be on the inside passenger side of truck...

“take it to a shop with a lift and ask them to clean out the air conditioner drain.”

"It is a clogged A/C drain. I had the same problem. The dealer can inclog it without much charge."

“You are hearing the water flowing through your heater core. There might be some air trapped in the cooling system. Check the coolant level first thing in the morning before you start the car. Top it off and put the cap on tight.”

The 1/4 tank bit makes me think it is time to remove the in tank fuel strainer , this is a really filthy , oily job that requires ramps and a 46 MM socket with 1/2" drive flex handle , wobble 12" extension or a 1/2" drive knuckle .

Once you've taken the Diesel bath and removed the screen , it is easily cleaned in a Hospital Clean container of fresh gasoline and an old tooth brush plus 5 # or so of _LINT_FREE_ clean rags or blue wiper towels .

It really sounds like it's drawing in air ~ and when the slimy crud collects around the in tank fuel screen , it forces the screen to begin drawing air from the top part of it when there's not much fuel in the tank ~ the 1/4 tank problems and stalling indicates this to me .

It matters not who you have paid to clean the in tank screen , I always find this is clogged until the owner removes and cleans it properly .

Have you tried holding both ends of each and every hose connection under the hood and twisting them ? if they're able to twist , you have an air leak , replace the hose with the correct IMPORTED 7MM DIESEL RATED fuel hose (! NOT the stuff NAPA etc. sell !)  and a full set of matching band typ hose clamps ~ those " ideal " (brand) screw typ clamps CANNOT POSSIBLY work 100 % ~ I know many here have them and all my cars did when I bought them but all have the correct $3 each German band typ clamps now and no air leaks in the fuel....

I understand you've tried all this but in the end , once you have eliminted everything else , whatever remains , no matter how unlikely , is always the root problem .

I run horribly high mileage and previously abused Mercedes Diesels (three of them) but I'm *very* picky about the details and I never have these problems in spite of always having dirty fuel troubles no matter where I buy my Diesel fuel .

Last Q. : how long ago did you last replace the secondary , screw on fuel filter ? .

This is the third time I have been towed because the vehicle stops running.  Some facts are:
1. Vehicle has 1/4 tank or less.
2. Temp is 25 degrees outside.
3. Diesel Kleen (white bottle) added
4. When operating the hand pumpfule comes out of the hand pump but none out of the bleeder screw on the fuel filter canister.
In the past I looked and the fuel lines were open to the fuel filter.

Any help is so appreciated.  This is really strange.
