Re: [diesel_mercedes] THUMPING AND ACOMPANYING NOISE

Thanks,
Bogy.

[diesel_mercedes] THUMPING AND ACOMPANYING NOISE

My 300TD just started making a chunking feeling thing and and an accompanying sound as I start out in first gear. More throttle makes it worse. It completely dissappears on deceleration. Accelerating in reverse is smooth as silk while decelerating in reverse makes it show up. The diff gears don't look bad and still have a lot of flat at the tops - no razor blades. There is some very minor slop in the spider gears and drive pin - to be expected on a rig with 370k miles. I can feel it in second too but to a lesser degree. Unless the tranny uses the same gear pack for 1 and 2 as it does for reverse, I can't explain it. There was a full compliment of gear oil too. I have a spare diff in good shape that would eliminate the diff as a suspect. but if its the tranny my long time trusted girl is over. :(
There is also a very long crack in the under carraige that I think is critical and may explain the noise. I will post files to
