Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Cooling Capacity 1987 300SDL

Do not add pure antifreeze in any large quantity. It can gel and plug
your cooling system. I know from experience. Always dilute before adding.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Cooling Capacity 1987 300SDL

you'll need 2 gal. either way, 4.8 quarts is over a gallon........and, 8
quarts is two gallons......
or, put a gallon in and get probably down to -20 protection......does it get
that cold where you are?

good luck,
Henry

Still not clear whether I should buy 1 gallon or 2 gallons of
undiluted anti freeze. Of course if I bought 2 gallon, then there
would be no problems, but I am trying to avoid buying excess
stuff--already got too much of excess stuff all around.

I tried this and there's no where to insert my hands , period .

Do I slide my hand (W/ 1/4" drive 10MM ratchet) up the right side
of the amp. ?

Or reach over it from the far right of the footwell ? .

Remember that truckers don't get paid unless their rig is actually moving. Don't make them wait behind you to get fuel. As *soon* as you're filled, PLEASE pull clear of the pump island before going in to pay or doing anything else.

If we all do our part to stay out of their way as best we can, we'll continue to be welcomed at the commercial pumps. (I *have* seen signs restricting the big rig pumps to "commercial vehicles only".)

The pinion bearings are tapered roller bearings. The only needle
bearings in the driveline are those in the universal joints -- four
sets in each U-joint.

If either one of the pinion bearings is loose enough to vibrate, you
are probably going to also need a ring gear and tail pinion, along with
both of the pinion bearings. Even if you do the work yourself (which I
wouldn't recommend), you're looking at more than $1,000 just for the
parts!

I have a hunch it will still turn out to be a U-joint or the yokes out
of phase with each other.

When the driveline was reinstalled, some of the needle bearings might
have fallen out of one of the U-joint's bearing caps.

Ken I totally agree. But if you just started getting the vibration

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Filtered Oil

Thanks Roger, I will try the truck lanes. I'm just getting used to the 40'
motorhome as the RV lanes can get very tight at some Flying Js. Are you
located in AZ? I noticed your email extension. We retired from AZ in 2003
and used Cox cable.

An out of balance driveshaft (caused by being out of phase, or bent) can quickly ruin a Pinion Bearing.
I would not argue that the Pinion Bearing is bad, but what is the cause?

Thanks for the input regarding the viration when coasting. It turned ut
to be a pinion gear bearing for those who might run into a similar

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Cooling Capacity 1987 300SDL

I would say that refers to the amount of antifreeze in the system, since,
the capacity of said system is static, they must be talking about how much
coolant to add first, then top off with water?
just a thought,
Henry

I would like to flush the coolant on my 1987 300SDL.

The users manual says that the anticorrosion/antifreeze @-30 deg C is
4.8 US quart and at -45 deg C it is 5.8 US quart. This doesnt exactly
tell me how much antifreeze (Zerex) I need to buy, Is it half of the
above amounts or is it the above amounts.

Thanks

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Filtered Oil

Richard, I don't think you missed anything. It appears as if I posted this
msg to the wrong board. However the conversion I was addressing was the use
of RV lanes versus truck lanes. The message topic started with water in
fuel. I had some very basic question regarding ULSD and LSD, commerical
pricing etc. The one important point for me was that the truck pumps have
final filters at the pump while the RV/car pumps do not. So in the future I
will be in line with all the truckers.

Sorry for the confusion, I'll be more careful with my replies. Hopefully the
filtered oil topic was on this discussion board as well.

[Diesel-RVs] Re: Vibration when coasting.

Hi Fred; The only way they could diagnose this without pulling the
Pinion would be to grab the yoke on the pinion and see if it had
play. If so the bearings are about to, or have already disingrated.
I read this post the other day and decided not being there I wasn't
going to do the diagnosing. These rear end vibrations could be
anything. OTOH I want to see them replace it without some major
disassembling.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Re: Vibration when coasting.

Hi Phil,

I have been wondering just how the pinion bearing was diagnosed without
pulling it.

Its been many years since I did work like this but this sounds a little
strange. It will be interesting to see if that really was the cause.

My money was on the drive shaft being reinstalled wrong after towing.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Vibration when coasting.

Chuck,
Yes, we did. But we did not get him looking at the radiator? U joint is very close to
the pinion bearing... and a lot more expensive to fix unless he is still under warranty.

Roger,
I did not see the explaination concerning the diesel fuel. Can you
enlighten me on the topic? I have been getting my fuel for my 2004 Dodge
Ram 2500 TD via the RV pumps at Flying J. I recently purchased a 40' 2006
Gulfstream Friendship G7 with Cummins ISL 8.3 liter 400 hp TD. Ant info
would be appreciated.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Auxiliary Water Pump

I would bet there are heavy amp replacements through military suppliers.
Several military vehicles use Mercedes engines.......

I'd also wonder if a bracket couldn't be easily constructed to adapt
different alternators, if necessary.

Ping me if you want military parts suppliers.

[Diesel-RVs] Vibration when coasting.

Thanks for the input regarding the viration when coasting. It turned ut
to be a pinion gear bearing for those who might run into a similar
problem. The mechanic may be able to change it without pulling the
axles but won't know until he pulls the plate off the front of the axle
housing. Glen Milender - Northern Minn - cold as it gets - 96 Safari

[Diesel-RVs] Filtered Oil

First let me thank everyone for the diesel fuel enlightenment, it was very helpful and now I'll start using the truck islands.

My next question has to do with a previous thread on additives and a discussion on adding filtered oil to the tank up to 5%, not that I have that much. The part that never seem to come up is how do you filter old crankcase oil to make it useable in the tank, and secondly can I burn an gallon of unused oil that been sitting in the garage? Other than getting rid of it does it provide any benefit to the engine?

Thanks in advance,

Roger 2003 Beaver Santiam 2000 Grand Vitara
& Dave the keyword WAS your Santiam, and no you can't have it back. I'll send you a picture after I remove all the decals and paint them on, along with a snapshot of the Joey bed......<gr>

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Speedo & Cruise Control Amp.

Nate,

Here's how you do it.
You get some knee pads from Home Depot.
Open the drivers door and kneel on the ground. Put your chest on
the drivers floor and reach up with your arms. You could twist a
little so that your right shoulder is on the floor and reach up.

The CC amp is up near the hindge for the brake pedal. Don't try to
remove the amp from it's bracket, you remove one or two 10mm head
bolts. The amp and bracket come out together.

Unpug the amp and unscrew a couple of small bolts, couldn't be
easier!

When we replaced the front main seal and timing chain, I am glad we
pulled the radiator out first, probably would of ended up doing that any
way after a lot of cussing and torn skin. Its a good opportunity to
flush everything out too. Max

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 85 TD Cruise Control Problems

I seem to recall this topic came up before ~ you have the typ II
(electric) system , maybe it's the cold solder joints on the C.C.
amplifier ? .

There's a few places you can mail off the amplifier and servo to and
they'll check then and do a ' TUNE UP ' typ of maintenence on them .

God alone knows how to get the C.C. amp. out from under the dashboard ,
I've been trying for over a _YEAR_ and cannot reach neither the amp.
nor the bracket it's bolted to as most recommend , to-day I have the
dash binnacle out and _still_ cannot even see it much less acess any
bolts holding it in .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] New to me 85 TD Problems

I'd think, then, that the surge is due to sloppy linkage........
When under a lot of pressure going up hill, it's fine, but, on level, it can
be adjusting quite often, and, if it's got a lot of 'slop' in the linkage,
it'll not know where to stop....

Just a random thought,
Henry
