Did you at least throw some SeaFoam in the tank?? Anytime I've got something sitting (when I know ahead of time) I dump a can (or more) in-- and try to "run it in..." It keeps the gas, and I think it does help in getting them (gas and diesel) re-started.. :)

Hey-- do any of the gasser manual transmissions fit up to the 4 and 5 cyl diesels?
If so-- what prevents it?? Is it something that could be overcome "reasonably easy" (flywheel/starter kind of stuff).

Yay ! .
No go _DRIVE_ the darn thing and run that stale fuel out of it before it turns to varnish and begins clogging and damaging $pendy parts .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Exhaust Smoke
As it not only smoked blue (oil) but covered the cove in nasty hard to remove Diesel Smoot every two weeks , and also always had wetness inside the turbo's snout , I was thinking that yes , the turbo seals were shot and allowing it to pass engine oil into the intake .
One of the things I checked each time I checked a turbo on a junker was : remove the black plastic intake 'U' boot and wipe my finger 'round inside the turbo's snout . most have a fair good bit of oil there plus of course , how muc radial and axial play the shaft has , along with does it spin freely or bind ? .
They're supposed to have minute amounts of axial play as the shadt runs in an oil bath but axial play s a big no - no .
So when I found a really clean inside and dry turbo on a junker that matched my '84 , I grabbed it and so far it seems O.K.with less smoke .
Your black smoke as the engine spools up to it's ' Sweet Spot ' is correct & normal ~ before you change anything else , remove the injectors and have them pop tested , most indie shops and Diesel Fuel Injection shops will have a pop tester and will do it while you wait .
DO NOT leave your injectors anywhere out of your direct site for even one moment ! .
If they're mis - matched or have even one that doesn't spray right on spec. or drools , spits visible droplets instead of a super fine fog like mist , consider replacing them all .
It only takes one bad injector to screw things up , sharply reduce power and kill your fuel economy .
Do a one tank fuel economy check , don't drive gently , just see what you're getting and go from there .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: fixed my driver's seat springs
My current Coupe's seat springs seem fine but a little soft , I find low mileage W-123's on a fairly regular basis and you can tell the difference immediately .
I wonder if stuffing pool noodles into the springs of a not yet broken seat spring assy. , would firm it up a bit .

Max,
We saw Lucinda Williams a few years back, as my wife won tickets on the radio. We drove to LA in the MB, and really enjoyed the show. Steve Earle played with her, as well as a bunch of other guest performers.
Hopefully, you'll be walking again soon.

Brian,
I did take some pics of the seat spring replacement, and will post at sometime after editing them, though as usual by pulling the used seat at the PAP, and removing the springs, you'll see how it goes back together. :)

Re: [diesel_mercedes] A Good Day All In All
Nate,
Nice job on the turbo replacement.
Question, was the old turbo leaking oil internally, so it was making the blue smoke?
The 'new' turbo is another used one, or rebuilt?
I get a puff of what seems like black smoke (could be brown) when I'm hard on the pedal, as when merging on the freeway, right when the engine revs to the highest point before shifting. I'm guessing there's more I don't notice, and so I'm wondering about the injectors too.

A Good Day All In All Posted by: "Nate" vwnate1@yahoo.com vwnate1 Date: Sun Sep 2, 2012 9:06 pm ((PDT)) Even though I'm in a world of hurt right now . I replaced the turbo on my '84 Coupe to - day , along with bunches of small things , 2 rubber air cleaner supports , the intake boot's rubber seals , now it fits really snugly ,first Mercedes I've had that the intake boot fits really 100 % so $ well spent I think . I replaced both engine shocks too and now it doesn't rock as much @ idle as it did before , the rubber buffers on each shock end are pretty tired so I'll order up those next . I sorted out some mis - matched engine hardware as that stuff bugs the heck out of me , turned the IP's rack damper bolt in 2/3 a turn , I hope that also helped the smoother idle . After all this plus , Tom followed me on the freeway a few miles and the blue exhaust smoke is *gone* so now I know to begin addressing the injectors then I'll see about adjusting the ALDA screw as it still smokes brown , that's excess fuel , not a thing I want . If it stops covering the cove with Diesel Smoot , I'll begin working to - wards that paint job it needs so badly . To - morrow , a day off , no works , just a ports Car Rally in Malibu , I will be driving my Metropolitan Nash Fixed Head Sports Coupe . -Nate
[diesel_mercedes] Re: fixed my driver's seat springs
Thanks Nate,
Like I said, the height control hasn't worked for the 7 1/2 yrs I've had
the car, until now, so I'll have to play around with it to find the best
spot, though I'm used to the place it's been. With the seat out, it was
easier to shampoo the carpet along the side, so I did. I'll put a few
pics up at some point.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] fixed my driver's seat springs
in my driver's seat. It wasn't too bad, though the seat has 4 slides and
you have to take it all apart to swap, with 3 screws in each slide. 2 of
my slides were frozen, and needed some grease (the one's that adjust
from the side lever). There are screws in the middle of each of the
slides, and they'll most likely slip inside when loose, and need to be
retrieved with a little magnet. Anyway, remove the seat back, and then
compress the seat and pull the fabric out of the little channel around
the edge, as the fabric is held in under pressure. I had to swap out a
fabric sheet which covered the springs, which was held in with hog
rings, as well as the foam from my car. Put it back together, clean up
the seat, the carpet along the edge, and bolt it back in. The passenger
and driver's side seats use the same springs, so I went for the
passenger side used seat to get the used springs. New springs are
available, and I'll see in the next few years if I made the right
decision by using the cheap used springs, rather than pop for the new
ones. Feels good now, and no more metal ends popping against each other
every time I sat down.
