Need to decide whether to abandon the original transmission to my 82 300D and go to a junk yard salvage one.

My Mercedes mechanic has given up.
He put the transmission together 2 or 3 times.
Tried every trick he new from his years at the dealership.
I have about 500,000 miles on this car and have owned it for 20 years.

Questions:
Do Mercedes transmissions just die like this?
Should I see if someone else wants to give it a try or abandon it?
My biggest question is - how sorry would I be if I plan on keeping the car another 20 years if I abandoned the old transmission and went to the best junk yard transmission I could find.

Have you taken it to someone else?

[diesel_mercedes] Central Locking

YAY ! .

It appears that I have fixed it for keeps (or until another thing in there fails) .

The final thing was replacing the wrong size 1" long rubber hose bits that connect the underhood yellow vacuum check valve to the yellow plastic pipes .

It turned out they were 1/4" and so slipped off the vacuum valve's nibs easily in spite of fitting tightly to the plastic pipes sticking out of the firewall .

I used some 5/32" vacuum hose, it's tough to install and requires a twist to remove .

The left rear window lift had begun to groan a bit so I took the door apart to fix that , as long as I was in there I removed all the carpets and replaced the various 'Y' connectors, some are three and some are four way, this helped as did replacing the leaky vacuum actuator inside the LR door it it'd still loose vacuum in less than 30 minutes so I kept looking and fiddling .

Remember : any vacuum hose that can be pulled right off, is _BAD_ and needs immediate replacement .

These pesky minor leaks are what causes 99 % of all shifting issues and causes slow engine shut off too .

I let it sit over 12 hours and the car unlocked all the doors trunk and fuel flap as soon as I unlocked the driver's door .
