Re: [Diesel-RVs] Cumins C8.3 300 DIY oil change

Hi Dean,

Its not just the engine size as some coach manufactures change the size of
the oil pan.

I have a 94 Monaco Dynasty with a C 8.3 that the Cummins book calls for 22
quarts but 20 brings it to full. You have to be careful of the long oil dip
sticks as the coach manufacturer provides them and they are sometimes
mismarked. Your 95 may have a Cummins installed dipstick under the exhaust
manifold. That is the bench mark to check the accuracy of the longer dip
stick. The only way 28 quarts would fit is if the pan is far larger than the
normal RV pan on the C 8.3 To be sure check with CC.

Here is a tip. Get a Fumoto valve instead of the stock oil drain plug. You
control the flow and its easy to drain the oil into empty oil jugs with no
mess.

My manual says I have about 28 quarts of oil in the engine. I have
done six oil changes and each time have drained @ 20 quarts from the
system and filled with about twenty quarts. The quantity includes the
oil filter and spillage (which I always seem to accomplish).

My measurements are reasonably accurate. I have done the oil change
with the rear wheels on a 6 inch ramp and also on the ground with the
coach leveled.

What is your experience with this engine as to quantities at oil change?

Thanks

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Cumins C8.3 300 DIY oil change

Dean,

I have a 91 Monaco with 8.3 mech. I had a new 8.3 installed at Cummins NW
in Anchorage last July. The old engine always held 20 quarts at oil change.
The new engine has a 1 gallon bigger oil pan. We had to re-work the exhaust
because of the bigger pan but I did not like the way the exhaust was anyway.
The new engine held 28 quarts at first fill. The first oil change I did when we
got back to Seattle it held 24. So there is 4 quarts of oil running around
in there somewhere.

[Diesel-RVs] Re: Rid-X

Have to disagree.

Rid-X does indeed build up in the black tank, even though the black
water is purged. Purging the tank does NOT eliminate the bacteria.

It also builds up very quickly to do its work. You do have to
continue to replace, just as you do in stick house environments. But
any bacterial treatment will work well... even the natural bacteria
that comes out of your body. Rid-X is more like a fast booster shot
that adds to the natural bacteria already present.

[Diesel-RVs] Re: RID-X

I have used bacterial only products for 5 years and never had a
problem. Rid-X is one of several products that work well. I often
use another product that has a series of liquid bacteria mixtures
that do different things. One I use from time to time is designed to
clear large drains.

Bacterial products create no smell while formaldehyde based products
replace sewage smell with an even worse smell, but one not associated
with human waste.

[Diesel-RVs] ultra low sulfur fuel in 2008 ford f-250

Does anyone know if there is an additive that will allow you to burn
low sulfur fuel in a engine that is made for ulsf. I want to drive
into Mexico where the fuel is still the 500 ppm.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] In our Vacuum

I keep a close eye on used sales (since I can't afford new).
Used prevost prices are dropping - and not slowly... I saw a 98 or 99
single slide 45 for sale this week at $275K. That's easily $75K off what
I would have expected just a few months back. Non-slides, that's normal.
Now it had higher than average miles @ 225K, and the interior was not
something I could rationally tolerate (mottled black laminate and red
velvet!) - but condition was excellent.

That was really a side-slappingly funny point you made there, Chuck.
I'll take your advice and mix Pine-Sol AND Rid-X together.

[Diesel-RVs] In our Vacuum

Hi,

Dave Head wrote:

............."Even with a 2 dollar increase in fuel, its the cheapest
expense I have.

In FL we have plenty of local campgrounds to visit to save money and
still enjoy the RV."

I absolutely agree with you but I was not talking about "us" but
"them" and those "them folks" (them-thar folks) are people with likely
way less retirement income to afford these rigs. But, as you do, I
have justified the expense because there is no other more fun way to
travel in such luxury. Besides, there are very few Hotel Rooms
(except maybe the Boss's Suite in Paris that he let me use, because he
was not in town, back in the 80's) that come close to our suite ride.

Them thar folks, though, will be looking at $6 fuel and will be turned
off. I am talking Class C buyers or families who up to now could
justify letting their RV's sit most of the time and then still drive
around on relatively cheap fuel. We have close friends quite a bit
younger than we are who own one of those Jayco Diesel rigs and they
are rarely using it and he did mention that now with fuel up so high
that they might dump it because of many reasons including the
depreciation and fuel expense.

Anyway, Dave, take a goosey-gander at the latest RV sales figure, and
the manufacturer's public number and I would bet that fuel prices
might be driving a bit of that.

But, I agree with you: even at $6 a gallon, that would just double
our fuel costs and we might drive a bit less. But, this is one of
our chosen things to do and we stubbornly refuse to let high fuel
prices keep us from enjoying it.
