Re: [diesel_mercedes] Windshield gasket replacement

Removing the glass isn't as difficult as putting it back in. The old seal can be cut to remove it. Be sure to use a factory replacement seal when you do this job, and I strongly advise you have a qualified glass shop do the work. We'll give you a decent price on the new seals.

I think it's about time for me to swap out the gaskets on the windshield
and possibly back window on my 85 300D. I looked into adding flowable
silicone, but the gasket is pretty cracked and crumbly. The water is
channeling around the window and pouring onto the passenger floor.

The glass isn't really that bad(pitted). My 80 240D is a lot worse. I
would like to remove the glass and just replace the gasket. Has anyone
done this job? Successfully without snapping the glass?

Do I try this myself? Maybe hire a glass replacement service? I
wouldn't think that they would guarantee not breaking the glass. They
would make more $ if it did break.

My favorite junkyard owner says that he uses oven cleaner to eat the
gasket when he salvages glass. I've heard through work that it works on
a lot of epoxies also.

No, I don't have insurance on the car for free glass replacement if a
stone accidentally smashes it.

Thanks for any heads up.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Windshield gasket replacement

It can be a DIY project. But, I had someone else do replacement windows + the rubber seals, and was happy I did. As I recall it was a $200 tab. I was most happy with a body guy who called in some window replacement pros. One trick I learned was they tossed the rubber seal out into the sun for 30 minutes to soften up before installation. I now put anything rubber out in the sun to soften up before installation - makes life much easier.

Is the battery cable pulling on the positive terminal and physically stressing the connection?  Bill in corvallis

It is indeed the outside/end cell, on the positive end.   I just wanted to be sure the car wasn't the problem before I put a new battery in it. I have done every sort of test I could find to be sure.   I will just assume the battery had some internal problem that has caused this.

My paycheck to paycheck lifestyle means I won't be able to replace it until Saturday.  I will get an Autozone battery to replace it, because it is an Autozone battery and still under warranty. Though not in the 2 year free replacement period.  They won't tell  me how much it will be to replace the battery over the phone, just a general quote of $30-$50.  said they will have to see it.  What the heck that is all about is beyond me.  I would think a pro rate would be based on time, not looks.

Anyway that'll be better than a hundred +.

Hi, I'm a sexy girl with a vacuum question about my 1984 300D. It wouldn't shut off today and when I investigated the problem, I discovered the vacuum tube had come loose off the ignition key thingameebob. I put it back on and the engine turns off fine now, but when I did the job, I found black oil inside the vacuum tube. I remember you guys saying something about how it is bad to have your tube dripping black oil and so I thought I would ask about it before I got down on my hands and knees again and crawled back under the dash.

Don't get me mixed up...I might end up buying a Cocoa Pebbles battery next time. I bought Interstate because of two main reasons: 1. that's what they had in the FLAPS I walked to when my battery crapped out, and B) four out of five dentists recommend them.

In defense of the lowly rubber muffler donuts - I put new ones on Mary yesterday. They were last changed 3 years ago (12/2009). They might have held on for another year, but I figured 3 years was a pretty good run. It is fall, so it is time for rehabbing all the maintenance stuff I have been putting off while the temps were 90-105F.

All batteries in the USA are made by one mfg (maybe 2), and everyone slaps their own label on so they can get product differentiation. Kind of like toothpaste or cereal.
