[diesel_mercedes] Door Seals

Try glycerin .

IIRC the owner's manual says talcum powder but glycerin is what I used Down East decades ago .

To - day I found an old timey Electronics Store like in the 1970's ! wonderful, chock full of all manner of electrical bits and bobs .

They even had AC power cords cheaply, I didn't see any high load three wire ones like I need to make up my block heater harness, I plan to go back ere long to look deeper and to try and chase down the 1969 (?) VW single cab pickup I saw putter by with a for sale sign in the back window......

I know what street it turned down lots and lots of apartment buildings with hidden from street view parking, I have to go back and try to find it .

This is for you guys in the frozen North. What do you put on the door seals? Its a very bad feeling opening your door and ripping the door seal off the door or the body. I need to re-do my Subie and the silicone spray I just used is not working. max

[diesel_mercedes] Windshield & Grommet

New glass is one of the very best bang for your buck things you can do on older vehicles, safer too .

I use All Star Glass, they're less than 50 % of what everyone else charges and yes, they know how to properly rope in an old tech rubber grommet glass like our oldies use .

Be smart and order a new correct grommet for your Mercedes from Tom at The Classic Center, it'll come right to your door in two weeks or so and will FIT RIGHT, not leak nor whistle .

[diesel_mercedes] Vintage GMC

? Was it a 223 or 302 i6 Max ? .

I was always taught that 8 volt batteries were a bad cheat but in the end they actually worked well and as long as the original generator was charging properly you didn't need to tweak it was the surge charge was 7 VDC anyways, plenty to make that 4 cell 8 volt monster  a cold starting powerhouse and not shorten bulb life at all .

[diesel_mercedes] Low Milers

Sweet Rob ;

shoulda grabbed seats from the low milers I found when the yuppuies, hipsters and L.A. jerkoffs were all going Diesel crazy, buying Granny cars and crashing them.......

Nice firm seats are a joy and more so as you get older .

I drive the hell out of my 420,000 _ mile coupe and it's still very good but your comments are bang spot on .

Raining in L.A. to - day, glad I'm in a W123 M-B and not some tin can old VW Beetle ! .

It is exciting to find a low mileage car, where you can drive the hell out of it for years, and still have a lower mileage car than most.

12yrs ago I found my car with 93K on it, whereas most others I saw at the time were in the 200K-300K range. What I noticed most was the seats, and the suspension, were much nicer.

Now I'm at 220K or so. Hoping for another decade.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Driving every day in Wisconsin

Out of curiosity, what did you do to Mary so that she required 2 engines in 220,000 Miles?.  I'd like to know so I can avoid that action.

This year I will replace shocks and suspension on this 35 year old lady with 220,000 miles on her.

I picked up Martha around 2005 with 230,000 miles. I was going to yank her engine and use it in Mary, but she had been well maintained and ran so well, I decided to keep her and she now has about 300,000 miles on her. She of course has her rear end slightly stove in, but is driveable.

Both are ongoing projects. But what else is an old retired guy with time on his hands going to do? Maybe I will get a small used pick up truck to add to the fleet in 2018.
