[diesel_mercedes] Re: 1965 MB 190 RUST!!!

It is the w110. It's mainly by the jack hole. The rocker panel, the wheel well and the drivers floor pan. And the frame part with the jack hole in it is not too bad actually.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 1965 MB W110 Parts

O.K. , THIS is what I was talking about ! .

Make a note of where this place is on the Internet and book mark it , download and save every page applicable to your car . many pages will later on be invaluable when you're trying to re assemble something .

If it has the M-B part #'s you might be able to use those to search OnLine for N.O.S. or reproduction parts of maybe ask Tom Hansen @ The Classic Center as he's very good at running down old parts .

Be aware : you're going WAY past the point of any monetary return , _ever_ and what you're heading into is not cheap .

It's well worth the effort , just don't wear rose colored glasses when repairing old Mercedes' .

[diesel_mercedes] Rusty Bodies

Yes Lawrence but , those California cars all have rust because rubber floor mats don't allow any water leaked inside , to evaporate and yes , all those same cars have crispy window grommets ~ Tom and I used to find loads of clean old 1960's vintage M-B Sedans , even the ones with the vaunted 6.9 V8 engine and even when they had shiny paint , almost every one also had gaping holes in the floors and trunks .

Every time I see a rust post I scratch my head and marvel at all the good bodies on the West coast.  It's a simple trailer ride to anywhere in the country.  You can't give away these old bodies languishing in junk yards.  I just saw a 72 gas 220 with a blown engine for 900 dollars on Stockton Craigs list.  Lawrence Rhodes

First ;

You're going to need to learn and USE the chassis series ~ is it a W108 ? W110 ? like that as that way folks will know what you're looking for/at .

Bill (?) posted a link to some old OnLine parts books , once you find those in PDF format , you can download and save them , copy and paste the images of what you need , Mercedes was very good about showing the individual stamped metal pieces the entire unibody is made of .

For now , you need to remove all the rust you can and encapsulate it , in some sort of good primer or other chemical so ti rust stops as RUST NEVER SLEEPS so failure to address it straightaway will mean chasing your tail forever here .

There are numerous products , I use mostly elbow grease and wire brushes , both the rotary kind chucked into a variable speed drill ($25 @ Harbor Freight)   and those old fashioned long wooden handle types , I have a plethora of various wire brushes .

USE EYE PROTECTION  any time you're using a drill motor ! I have permanent metal chips in one eye , you DO NOT want to go there , flip up face shields are cheap and if you take any sort of care of them ,. last for years .

What you're finding is normal to ALL old M-B's from the 1960's so don't lose heart ~ just roll up your sleeves and get to work , only take apart small areas as you go along .

I knew my first project car had rust....but this is bad. I pulled the flooring out and there were some holes about the size of 1/2 of a dollar bill. The rocker panel on the drivers front is bad and leading into the wheel well is gone. There is the chrome trim towards the bottom below that is just gone towards the front of the drivers side....and then behind that and behind the wheel well looks like frame parts and it is falling apart right there. Wish I had a pic. Maybe I can get that soon. I don't know the name of the part to even begin to look for a replacement. but its the square-ish part that is parallel to the rocker and when you see past the wheel well since it is gone, you can see down the square-ish part I am talking about. What can I do in this situation?
