[diesel_mercedes] Re: Too Many Posts ?

Must be something bad happenin in the zodiac, be cool people, and enjoy the banter, life is too short to be serious all the time. The group can deal with serious when it needs to, but friendly chit chat is kinda fun, and there are educational nuggets tucked away in many posts.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Too Many Posts ? No, not really

Sir,

Two of the four of your most resent "posts" (which, by-the-way, only added to the "clutter" of which you complain, as they were simply reposts) included a suggestion by Mr. Hanson of the Classic Center on how to add fog lights to a W126 sedan, and the opine of a fellow poster on his trepidation on removing the door panel of his Mercedes, thoroughly on topic.  While the other two may not have any real relevance to the topic of diesel Mercedesez, there have been many so-called off-topic posts that have provided for me practical advice, wisdom and wit.  For a poster to simply "Reply To Sender" would deny me of this.

Secondly, there is NO WAY your are getting 200 messages a day from this group.  IMPOSSIBLE!  I'm on a total of four Yahoo groups, and from all of them included, PLUS daily updates from several websites that I subscribe to, AND the occasional spam that sneaks through my filter, doesn't even come close to 50 e-mails a day.  MAAAY

Lastly, when has anyone even mentioned eBay?  Weeks ago, at least, and then for a single post.  "Goes on for days"?  Huh?

Your statements and, therefore, complaint lacks credibility.

This group averages 10-20 messages per day, and we are well over 10,000 posts nowadays. The subject line should define what the topic is all about. Assuming that people are commenting about (lets say) a "w123 thermostadt" then you can do a search on 10+ years worth of posts dealing with that subject matter. Same with any of the dozens of repetitive and common problems. Add to that the dozens of photo files and document files and you have a gold mine of useful information. If you are dealing only with current postings, you are missing 3/4's of the value of this site.

Whine. Nate.

And what I want to know is where are these people that complain about getting a wee bit off topic when there is a problem?

I never ever see any of the complainers giving any useful input.  Nor ask questions about their cars...do they run perfectly??? If so, I'd be impressed if I believed it!  I'm on here to learn from those that know more than I do and to help if I happen to know something useful.

Digest is an easy way of getting the list messages and you'll only get a few a day rather than dozens, easy to scroll through to see if there is anything relevant, easy to hit delete and clean up the inbox.

Get a used front bumper assembly from a 126 Coupe and hook up the driving lights to the fog lights next to the headlights. You'll need to use the top chrome parts from your sedan bumper on the coupe bumper.

I hit a deer one night as she strolled from the no. 1 lane to the no. 2 on a four lane highway. I was doing 60 and had just enough time to take my foot off the gas (diesel?) when we collided. I'm thinking of adding driving lights to my W126 diesel. Has anyone mounted aftermarket lights? If so, what's the optimal location and are you satisfied with the results?

Thanks,

Greg

Oh, good.  I'll work up a long irrelevant post on the peculiarities of the  Eaton axle w/ Detroit Locker, as used in 3/4 ton IH pickups.  After all, 'bout everybody knows all about the various Dana axles..

Actual MB content: Today I paid the non-op fee; shut off the plates and insurance on my late wife's 240D, it rests alongside the 300SD in the field across the driveway, still on studded snow tires.  I haven't driven it in months.   I may bring the SD back to life this fall, I'm re-instating my real estate license, and the SD is/was just about a perfect real estate car...

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : Idle rough at traffic lights

Like others have said, there are many reasons for a rough idle. The Rack Damper bolt only needs to be replaced if it can't be adjusted properly any more. It's on the back of the IP and has a lock nut that you loosen, and then slightly adjust the bolt tighter, while idling, until the idle evens out, then re-tighten the lock nut.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : W115 Value

The coupes are worth significantly more than the sedans.  There appears to be a large following in Germany where they are commonly called /8s.  The one I had was cheap to run and fix but it couldn't stand up to the handling, or should I say mishandling of my 17 year old daughter.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Becker Radios (again)

If you run the speakers down, they probably won't work any better.

I really need to begin photographing the awful looking and filthy Beckers I find in Pick-A-Part as they're *so* nasty , often you cannot read the letter & number on the buttons etc. and when they're finished they look so nice and sharp .

I use Meguiar's # 40 Rubber & Plastic Cleaner / Conditioner and soft tissues to gently loosen then float away the grime , then I use a Foo-Foo can of compressed air (Computer Cleaner) to blow out the hidden moisture that gets behind the buttons and into the LCD and screws it all up .

The original 1984 Becker Electronic in my Coupe , degraded until it stopped working completely over a week or two , I'd cleaned the face plate in situ a while before and as it died , each number crystal illuminated all it's segments and the radio wouldn't turn on nor off , no volume control and it said it was playing AM & FM simultaniously , all I heard was static .

As it's always damp & foggy overnight where I park it near SWMBO's house , I decided to remove the face plate and blow it out as I felt that any residual moisture from the cleaning , may have spread until it shorted out the circuit , I was amazed at how many tiny droplets of liquid blew out of the various cervices and buttons .

I just now re placed it and Lo ! it plays fine again so I took the newer Becker Grand Prix I'd replaced it with , out and tested some of the grimy but free face plates I'd collected , one works fine so I took that into the shop and ever so carefully cleaned off the grease , dust , food globs and God alone knows what all else , blew it dry and schlepped it out to the car and , once again I was rewarded with a nice playing radio that looks As-New again .

Tom says he wants to play with the faceplate with the loose & not working well volume tab , I'll also give him another faceplate that has bad LCD segments , else I'd have to toss it in the trash , a thing I hate to do .

I need to go through my stacks of Beckers and clean them all up for future use or maybe swap for other parts I need .

Soon I'll run down some good quality front speakers as one has begun to crackle a bit .
