All right, getting ready to spring into action:

1. The insurance company for the driver will pony up $4,230. They have called Martha a "total loss" but I intend to keep her.
2. The collision repair shop has an estimate of $6,500 to repair the rear end damage.
3. I can get parts from Classic Center in Irvine, and other places to probably get the repair costs down around the $4500-$5000 range.
4. The rear panels are barely dented and we may be able to pound them out, thus saving $2000 for two rear fender body panels.
5. I have a good left tail light assembly thus saving another $400. Maybe one of you can find a right tail light assembly somewhere. I will take "great" but "good" is acceptable.
6. The trunk lid is $2000 and I would like to find one somewhere at a cheaper price.
7. There are lots of $2000-$4000 w123's for sale with various issues. It is getting to be a toss up as to whether I buy a parts car somewhere or not. At the moment I think I can take the $4,230 from the insurance company and rebuild Martha's rear end. Will need trunk lid, two tail light assemblies (have one), panels above the bumper, and maybe some trim parts.

Feel free to comment.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Meintenance Co$t$

You  hand pack the grease gun and mash  the back cover down till it starts working. Whenever it does not work pressure the back down till it works. Thats how mine works. Max

Many here have helped me to $ave big on parts and other services ! .

They're safer than moderns cars too and since I'm going to be working on old machines anyway, I might as well put the labor and dollar$ in where I feel I get good dollar value .

At this point I realize I prolly should have bought a different Diesel Coupe but in for a penny, in for a pound .

BTW : I received the needle typ grease gun yesterday, it looks pretty good, I'll have to figure out how to load and operate it, looks pretty simple to me.

I plan to use White Lithium based long fiber grease for the rood hinges .

@ $10 U.S. including shipping this German made tool looks a good bargain to  me .

Begin researching Body Shops now, use YELP and look at finished jobs so you'll choose the right place as many simply do not care about proper masking, re using every little washer and seal, body plug etc.

I'd also say begin a search string to keep an eye out for that parts car/wreck/failed project or whatever as you'll be far ahead in $ that way .

[diesel_mercedes] W123 AC

Yes, very hot here and me being old, fat and crippled doesn't help things much .

Luckily I have one Buddy who designed some SANDEN AC compressor brackets and also figured out how to utilize a modern, more efficient cross flow condenser so I'm firming up plans to have him do this upgrade to my Coupe soon as he has the time .

I'll prolly also do it to my '84 300TD as the wagon has so much glass to let the heat and UV in it needs all the help it can get .

Yesterday I was up and out in the back yard mowing the knee high dead grass before July 4th wwen fire is a real problem here .

I worked for three hours and  densely packed a 100 gallon wheelie bin (TIP: load the fine silt and dirt _last_ to maximize the load) , as I was pulling weeds next to my work area the sun cleared the house and hit my neck so I stopped, still lots more to rake up and load yet .

Crawling on my knees pulling grass and weeds from the bricks is prolly very good exercise and God knows the dogs _LOVE_ me working close to the ground and near them but it's hard and filthy work to be sure .
