O.K. a while back the druggies across the street from my GF's house decided that side swiping my beloved old Mercedes Diesel Sports Coupe , breaking the mirrors off my two trucks , driving 10' across the sidewalk and into the driveway to bash my '59 Metropolitan Coupe wasn't bad enough ~ they decided to back a truck into my Mercedes Coupe's front end , the pickup of course was raised up so it cleared the bumper and bashed in the grille and shoved the electric AC fan into the AC condenser , bending it severely and shattering the electric AC fan beyond repair , before once again driving off with nary an " hey F you White Boy " . interestingly , none of the Black Folks who live there and park in the exact same places , _ever_ gets any damage to their vehicles .

Anyways , the plastic fan shroud was also broken and unknown to me was rubbing against the upper tubes of the $500 custom made all metal radiator I have in the car , causing three tubes to rupture and leak coolant out .

I took it all apart and you can see the bent evaporator and the ring smashed into it from the AC fan .

Fun eh ? .

I was able to find an N.O.S. OEM BEHR condenser , after some looking I found a real Radiator Shop a few towns over ~ as brass radiators are no longer being used in modern cars , few of the shops are left .

The Radiator guy looked at my radiator and commented " this is beautiful " ~ then he set about repairing the three tubes and charged me only $40 .

I hope to get it back in the car along with the new AC Condenser and SANDEN AC compressor and a new expansion valve plus new radiator hoses , this weekend or maybe early next week .

-Nate

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Air Filter mounts & 'Y' Bracket

Thats what I thought, I have not been down there for a very long time. This will be my first summer in 5 years without surgery, looking forward to it. Max

Just started driving my 240 4-spd.(my main 240) and the starter is kicking out again. Does anyone live in cold climate with this symptom?  While cranking when cold(defined mid 30's and down), starter gear kicks out and then sounds like its eating a ring gear. Its a Shucks lifetime, re-built Bosch and I think they must not replace the big spring. When the car is warm it starts on the first pop. Yea, should of would of could of bought a Mercedes, but I had enough of Mercedes dealers with my 190D. Max  P.S. starters are a whole lot easier on non turbos to replace.

Sooner than later you're going to be forced to replace the broken 'Y'  bracket , might as well take the time now to do the  job right , $ave your self Some $ and frustration too......

I use a wobble extension on that hard to reach 13 MM bolt .

Expect to drop it , no worries just go buy another one if you can't find it easily .

BE SURE to use spring typ wave washers under neath every 13 MM ATF bolt ! .

Had ordered the new air filter housing rubber mounts and put 2 in yesterday. The old ones had broken at the rubber, and the bottom of the mounts took a vice-grip to unscrew out. After that saw that the Y-bracket had broken at the front right side. I do have an old salvage one. And then I saw the bolt which holds the Y-bracket,way inside the bottom Y-part (the part which has always bothered me about this setup). Could not get it out with a straight extension- I think I need an appropriate flex-extension.

So just replaced 2 mounts ( this time with heat shields). and tied the third side ( the front right) down to the EGR valve with steel wire. Looks very firm, and shakes very little. I know this will put more pressure on the unbroken ones.

I think I may be able to just put a washer on the broken side of the Y and just screw the mount on top, to hold the mount to the Y. That way won't have to replace the Y, and mess with the bolt holding it way down there.

[diesel_mercedes] Heater Fans Replacement [1 Attachment]

The Mercedes heater fans tend to wear out their brushes after a few decades , they are not designed to be serviceable but The Mercedes Source in Bellingham , Wa. has a nifty $10 +/- kit that includes new brushes plus a how to DIY booklet for the adventurous DIY'er .

Very helpful for the budget minded W-123 & W-126 owner .

I tried it and it worked fine although the commutator was severely worn so it has been bothering me ever since ~ I don't like temporary nor half assed repairs but the blower motor until recently (about  a year ago) was $1,500 from Mercedes or $500 aftermarket and some aftermarket parts are pure garbage .

When Uro (brand) dropped their price to $100 , I bought one and stashed it away , luckily this ONE TIME I remembered where .

The AC blower in my European Spec. 300TD died so I decided to shuffle blowers around my fleet  a bit :

The new Uro blower went into my beloved 1984 Diesel Sports Coupe and the old blower that worked fine with it's new brushes , went into my Euro. Wagon .

The new Uro blower is slightly re designed and seems to work just fine although it makes that electric motor whining sound so common in the 1940's .

It also makes more air noise on high but , it works and I usually leave it on low most of the year .

The Wagon's blower had quit some time ago and only worked on high , this being the usual indication of worn out brushes .

It also vibrated severely on high , the attached picture shows why : it had some old nuts in the squirrel cage ~ I can find no other evidence of rodents anywhere so who knows how this happened .

I may well take  it apart and install a brush kit *if* the commutator is in good shape .

FWIW , just having the blower work as it did when new , moves a rather large quantity of air  , silently ~ this is a very good thing in a vehicle without vent wings .

WTF Nate!!!
I'm guessing they take no responsibility for this? No insurance? No cops?

maybe a security cam, so you can catch them and prove it, in the future?

Jeebus!!

[diesel_mercedes] Maybe , Just *maybe*....... [2 Attachments]

Could it be ? .

Maybe possible ? .

My primary fuel filter has remained clear for three weeks now .

I can't ever recall it not having fungus crud in it since I bought this car years ago .

I have been adding " Startron " enzyme that eats the fungus for a long time but this last time I seriously overdosed it and it seems to have worked .

I changed both filters and everything looks fine for now.....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Air Filter mounts & 'Y' Bracket

That is what I do, then I put strong jack stands under and lower the car down, and I leave the floor jack in place too. The older I get, the more I want. If I had a hydraulic lift, I would use that too.
