[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Milage Check 1984 300CD Auto W/ AC

416 miles , 26.6 MPG , mixed driving , some AC use and traffic idling too .

I'm well pleased .

$4.60 /gallon , I'm a bit less pleased about that .

The car runs fine and scoots right along , worth every penny and bashed knuckle .

I hope to have some good news Late Friday or Saturday .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Question : Fungicide

Looks bad on two counts :

# 1 they say " algae " and that cannot possibly be in your fuel tank as it requires sunlight to grow....

# 2 they say the emulsified oil separates out ~ then what? I don't want any sludgy emulsified (means mixed with water) oil anywhere near my Mercedes , much less sloshing 'round in the fuel tank.....

I'm sure it kills off the fungus just fine ,pretty much all fungus killers work well ~ the problem is : where does the dead fungus go ? .

So far , only Startron by Starbright both claims _and_ has a proven track record of actually breaking the dead fungus down far enough for it to pass through your fuel system and out the exhaust , no tank cleaning necessary .

I still don't have any fungus problems any more , you may recall I had 1/2" of dead glop in my fuel tank and everywhere else in the system , so bad the car lurched to a halt in traffic a few times but Startron fixed it while I drove...

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Question

Not familiar with this product - but always interested in products used in marine diesels (like Startron) as the fungus among us is always more prevalent along coastal waterways and vessels using diesel engines.

The shift knob comes off after you carefully loosen the 13MM nut on the base of the shifter .

Cetane booster is good , very good as it'll pay for itself in increased mileage .

Start Tron is for fungus , keep an eye on the clear intake screen and use it at the first hint of dark fuel , or just add it every fourth fillup as a prophylactic measure .

be very careful what kind of prophylactics you put in your fuel tank some of them are better applied in the back seat.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: A/C compressor for '84 SD..

Rebuilt R4 AC Compressors are only $25 or so less than new and they're _SHYTE_ ~ 100 % CRAPOLA .

If you buy a ' rebuilt ' , no whining later after it grenades and fills the ENTIRE AC system with oils nasty ground metal flakes and chips that'll take a serious flushing to get out again .

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED .

Oh yeah ~ find & use , " ESTER OIL " ~ that's a brand name for the good stuff .

Always something different. Stuff leaks out. Over the years we have replaced everything. AC season is short here so it's kind of a hobby. Mine was not $300, wonder if they went up a bunch? Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Sylvia - '84 300 SD - update + auto shift knob question + tow hitch suggestions?

I'd be interested in knowing what the service costs are for the diesel jetta vs the 300D, in the future. I am interested in both but the Scirocco I once owned put me off VWs; it was normally aspirated and the gasket between the carb and intake mainfold was a rubber covered metal spacer. When the rubber deteriorated, vacuum leaks and rough idleing ensued. No problem to replace except the part cost more than $300 (sans installation). Probably why the PO traded it.
