Re: [diesel_mercedes] Classic Center contact?

The next two weeks is a vacation. A badly needed one.
I'm tired!! I'm thinking the radio wiring stuff is in
the W126 service cd-rom. I'm not sure if this old
amplifier stuff is still available or not. I don't
recall ever selling any of these components. They must
have been really good parts! I remember when they came
out. Decent sound at the time. Heck, I remember a new
220D with one speaker in front, and that was an
option. That car was under warranty when I started
selling parts for MB. Look me up in two weeks and
we'll find out more, or you can send in an inquiry
through normal channels,

You forgot to tell him that today we had icy cold rain, hail, and snow down to 2000 feet closing the grapevine and mountain roads with truckers pulled over for the night. So much for our sunny reputation.

wonder, though, will that effect the accuracy of the speedo?

It would hsow faster than you were going.  The speedo is calibrated to a 300D, but the 240D final drive is turning less RPM.

[Diesel-RVs] Re: House WATER PUMPS

Darrell,
Remember that water will not compress, if it expands it's gotta go
somewhere. It will find the easiest way out ,in this case its
probably going to be back through the pump valves & out to your
fresh water tank. If you have an air expansion tank that is where
the expanded water will go.
I live in a rural area and when the water co-op was
required to install backflow preventers at each persons meter
they suggested that everyone install a expansion tank. It seems
that before, the entire system had been acting as our expansion
device. I probably made it more confusing but thats the way I
understand it.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Greasecar W-123 300TD On CBS News

Hm ;

1/2 way through my response , the 'puter burped and my message
dissapeared..... are the Black Helicopters circling again ? . =8-)

Anyway , my surprise was that Network News would care ~ the last
greasecar story I saw on TV was some dirty college hippies
feverishly working on a junker VW van they'd stuffed a worn out
Rabbit Diesel engine into , then they wheezed it across America ,
breaking down constantly and never taking the time to bathe....

To me , the slant of the story was something like : look at the
stupid nasty dirty tree hugging hippies , aren't they
stupid/comical ? .

The CBS bit last night , was tight and well written , showed a clean
shaven _Doctor_ who lived in a perfect house , in a nice
neighborhood driving a pristine Mercedes and so on.....

_TOTALLY_ different presentation of the greasecar idea , this time
it was 100 % posative and upbeat .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] FrankenBenz lives!!

Hi Bogy.
Good point.
Although, it's going to be a mostly town/short trip car, and, I live in a
hilly area, so, I may want it lower.

I wonder, though, will that effect the accuracy of the speedo?

Thanks,
Henry

You might want to consider finding a rearend/differential for a 300D. The ones
on the 240's are geared a little lower. So you are going to notice your 5
banger reving up more than you might like.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Correct Tire Pressure

The 110 psi cold is the maxium COLD pressure you can put into the tires. As you drive down the blvd, the heat from the tires rolling will increase that pressure. That is why Goodyear wants you to use the cold pressure figures at the beginning of each day. The duals on the rear need to be within one or so lbs from each other or one tire will run hotter than the other. I'm sure someone will chime in about road crown.

You need to load your coach with all your goodies, the DW, fill your diesel tank, propane and fresh water tanks. Then go weigh your coach. Goodyear has a chart on what tire pressure you need to use for each axle. You can probably find that chart on line.
You never did say what size tires you had. Chuck B

Try unbolting the center driveshaft bearing mount.  That will give you the clearance that you need.

I lowered the transmission after taking off the back support. The drive
shaft isn't comming out & the whole thing just hangs there. I jacked it up
a bit to support it. At this point shouldn't the drive shaft just fall
down. I see copper inserts in the bolt holes for the drive shaft connector
to the transmission. Lawrence Rhodes.....

Yep, you and the other 20 million folks in So. Cal.. The snow and cold
is not that bad. We like it most of the time. True story, my brother had
a friend who moved there(when we all lived there) from Germany, the guy
lived there for months before he realized there were mountains nearby,
they could not be seen because of the smog. You can have it. California
is no doubt one of the most beautiful states, beaches, mountains,
desserts, Redwoods, but it kind of got filled up with too many people.
Then there is the freeways. Actually I've heard they are not all free
anymore, got some tollways now? P.S. The most beautiful day I've ever
seen is when its below zero and the sun comes up and reflects the light
on frozen ice crystals floating around, kind of like LSD. Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Auto transmission hanging up.

You must remove at least three bolts from the flex disc, and then pry it
apart. It will NOT slide out of the tailshaft, it's bolted in.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: CD's, Manuals, etc Public Note

Hey don't give me this "old man" stuff any more.  I am almost sixty and I pushed a 240d  onto a two wheel dolly myself today. I did that at 6:15 am in weather that was +4 Fahrenheit. So don't pick on your old man, lol.

What I can and Will do, and this is advised by my father/Lawyer, is to let the individuals who were so kind enough to give me advice/help to borrow the Original Manuals that I received from the Manufacturer. My father's words were "Don't try to get away with sneaky stuff, just try to be a genuine person." I think we can all agree that we are a group that helps each other work on their cars together, and that this is in no way immoral for me to assist my friends/group-members.  I think safety is an important issue, I think it is important to take care of your car. Just last week in Mariposa (near Yosemite, California) I lost most of my braking power driving on a dangerous mountainous road in the snow towing my friends 1963 Drag racer on it's original trailer.  No I wasn't towing it with a diesel Mercedes.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Correct Tire Pressure

Your tire pressure is directly related to your load on
the coach, wheel or side. You need to load your coach
with what you need to carry. Get it weighted. Total
for the coach and then each wheel. Then you determine
tire pressure for the tires.

I got mine started the other day. Plugged in my block heater to my Heart
inverter for a couple of hours and the car started on about the third
try. I realized I have been missing out on driving fun all these years
by parking my Mercedes in winter and driving the 4WD Toyota or Subaru.
What a gas to drive a rear wheel drive Mercedes with a couple hundreds
pounds of cat litter in the trunk and 4 new snow tires. I love the way
it slides around corners and the heaters in both my 240's are killer,
almost as good as a Subaru, which are known around here as little
toasters. One more plow on our driveway and were gonna need a cat to
push the banks back. Riding down the road with my kid driving is like a
bobsled run now. . Happy winter, Max

No debate. I have obviously flooded my own just this morning, when I started
it on full throttle. Did the same just an hour ago, too. Flooded my last one
every winter morn, too. And the company trucks, too. Every day.
Person who advised you lives in southern Cali and has no idea what he is
saying. Read the Manual!!! The manufacturer would NEVER advise something
that would lead to flooding, NEVER.
I have seen the exact same starting advice in manuals as diverse as a
mid-sixties Ford truck, mid-seventies VW Rabbit to a late eighties Iveco,
almost word for word.
But feel free to ignore the advice of the folks who built the car. After
all, what the hell do they know?!?!

How so? If the pressure/temperature relief valve is leaking it will leak
water whether or not there is/was air in the tank once there is incoming
water pressure on the tank.

Just last week in Mariposa (near Yosemite, California) I lost most of my braking power driving on a dangerous mountainous road in the snow towing my friends 1963 Drag racer on it's original trailer.  No I wasn't towing it with a diesel Mercedes.

Going to Maui for a few days with my Father.  I asked my father if he would try to get physically conditioned enough to paddle his ocean outrigger canoe from the island of Maui to Molokai with me (before he gets too damn old). Last time there it seemed totally do-able but the conditions were too perfect.  The old man is over sixty now, but his 8 years of Coast Guard and many years of surfing still serve him well.  They don't make cars or people like they used to.

We had that, briefly, back in the '60s. The early TransAm races were
just as you describe. Then, out came the big bucks, and it became a
contest between Ford and Roger Penske.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Re: House WATER PUMPS

Gary,

When water or another liquid is heated in a confined space, the pressure can
rise very quickly because the liquid wants to expand, and there is no place
to go. The pressure rises much more slowly if there is a gas space in the
system. The fluid expands into the available space and the gas compresses.
System pressure rises much more slowly. Both the gas and the liquid will be
at the same pressure by definition. That¹s why accumulator tanks are used on
liquid systems.
