RE: [diesel_mercedes] Head experts...your insight please

Looks good to me!

Is there any evidence of corrosion/rust on the mating surfaces?  (Hard to tell in photos....)

Did you see anything on the "bad" head that indicated a problem?  What does the receiving engine's low end look like?

Well got the head off the donor car today (recall needing to R&R the head on a 1979 W116 300SD). First time doing this so...

If the experts would care to gander at the photos and give me their feedback, I'd be ever so grateful!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Head experts...your insight please

Ben,

No experience with MB heads, but:

I would remove the glow plug chambers and try to clean them.  If they do not clean up, I would replace them.

I would replace all the glow pugs while it is easy.

I would clean all the carbon off the head and try to figure a way to test the valves (If you don't have a better way - turn the head so the ports are up, pour gasoline in each port, and see if the gas leaks out.)

I would clean all the carbon off the pistons, but be careful not to get the carbon bits into the engine.

Lots of work - good luck.

Can't you get keys from dealer that fit your locks a whole lot better/faster/cheaper than swapping out the locks?

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Rubber muffler hangers for 123

If everything is still routed exactly the way it was from factory that will work, but I have changed out the muffler which now has a slightly different angle, and the PO backed over a tree stump or something and bent the hanger arms...so mine needs custom sizes or I get a rattle.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Head experts...your insight please

Well Ben. I am not an expert but in 1958 I did tear apart a lot of heads and rebuilt them. I was 18, worked in an auto parts machine shop with an old German (mustard gassed in the Argonne in 1918) who was the master of his trade. Now I do not know why a bright young lad such as you would not want to send that head out for rebuild (and the block too). Unless you have a death wish, rebuilding these things yourself is something to undertake only as a PROJECT and could be detrimental to your marriage. On the other hand, if you have the time, and the money, and the interest, and the friends, I think it could be a great project for you. I would tear it down, steam clean everything, send it out for a hot dip, if it were a chevy v8 I would magnaflux it, are the pistons and rings in good shape (looks like a little oil seepage around the pistons).  At my advanced age of 103, I would order a rebuilt head and use yours as a core. At your youthful age of 35, I might consider rebuilding it myself. If I were your wife, you would be sleeping on the couch for 12 months.

These things do not exist in local PAP's (we call 'em junkyards, but that's no nevermind anyways).

You West coast guys obviously don't understand "eastern" dialect .  He wants door locks and the keys to fit them.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Klima II HVAC Fun (?)

It cooling off when you're at speed , you need a new Monovalve .

I you hunt around , you can find just the center part that goes bad , about $50.00 IIRC .

W-126's in junkyards are loaded with them brandy new , look for the metal button on top to be cleaner than anything else under the hood .

No need to drain coolant , just carefully remove the four screws and lift the guts out , look in side the valve body , if any crud or whiteish residue wipe it clean with a clean rag , when you're installing the new guts , pay close attention to the alignment of the barrel shaped part to the cover - it has a locating tit .

[diesel_mercedes] Monrovia PAP

Today I went back to the Monrovia PAP. Here is what I brought home:
2 seal beam headlights at $4.00 each; 2 clear fog lamps at $9.00 each (the counter guy said $37.50 each, I said no way; he said but they are German, look it says Bosch; I said where is the yard boss; he said I will call him; I reminded said yard boss that I am a good guy; yard boss said "call them lenses" for $9.00 each). I am just changing out the old yellow fog lamps I never use and putting the clears in for better night time vision.

Here is what I left behind:
1. 2 300D tail light assemblies (I give them a grade of "B" only because there is age cracking on the white bottoms. I may go back and pick them up for my car, but I don't need them at the moment.
2. There are 5 or 6 240D Hub Caps which need clean up and repaint (2 yellows look good as is).
3. There are 4 or 5 Bundts with tires that look pretty good. If I needed a spare tire, or wanted to powder coat some more wheels I would grab these. They are on the car today, maybe not tomorrow.
4. In the fenced area (cars not released into the yard as title is not cleared yet), there is a plethora of treasures - 123's, 126's, 114's 116,s, and many more. These would make you drool and think of ways to be there when the forklift brings them out. Monrovia is looking better in my book, worth making monthly or quarterly checks.

Saw a really nice looking TD with all the right parts. Unfortunately, it was in the parking lot and the owner was inside the yard.

Monday, I will head for Ontario PAP (a sister to Monrovia) which usually has a good selection of MB's, and then to Pomona which is not quite as good as the other two.

Hi Nate

I did this on an 84 Chevy van ran it for 3 years with a non turbo 300d engine conversion, ran fine but a bit underpowered. (Still got it round the back). My current project is a turbo OM617 into a Range Rover. Easier than the Chevy as on the RR I have made up a conversion plate so the OM617 just bolts up to the RR gear box, splines are the same I'm told....... the Chevy conversion involved fusing the MB prop shaft to the Chevy shaft - balancing etc

Nice job the other bloke's doing..........
