Re: [diesel_mercedes] Holy Cow price difference!

Trish and Caitlin,

There may be as many as  6 mounts - ain't that weird.

The two "normal" ones.

A shock absorber next to each of those.

A mount in the front center.

A mount under the rear of the transmission.

I have never worked with these, but here is my advice.

Replace the normal ones.

Test the little shock absorbers - if they are "sticky" and don't move smoothly or if they offer no resistance to movement - I would replace them.  If they seems OK, keep the old ones.

Try to verify the center front mount - check condition.

Remove and check the condition of the transmission mount after the new engine is installed. (Caitlin - after the motor mounts are replaced.)

Good luck to both of you and to Kevin.

Bobby

Thanks Mark.  I didn't see that it said the price was for a pair though.

BTW Kevin got the motor out last night!  We don't have the gas money this weekend. Besides I told Kevin this weekend he has to build Blu a new house.  I don't like this crappy igloo thing.  Yesterday I discovered it was soaking in there.  Poor thing.  His skin is getting better, but due to the stress on his system he's getting cataracts.  Thankfully I have a "cure" for that.  I was extremely distraught until I found out what was going on.

Anyhow it'll be in the next couple of weekends when we can get down there.  IF my check shows up on time we can do it next weekend, if not it'll be the following week.  I won't know anything until the 11th.

I'm searching for my motor mounts.  AutoHaus cost for one is around $14. Ebay seller cost for one is around $17. I just checked Diesel Giant they want $98 for two!  WHAT????  What's the difference?

Don't the 240D's use cables instead of vacuum? Or were there different models with different levels of automation?

From what I read in other forums that is an indication that the brushes are bad. I have read that you can get them from George Murphy

http://www.dianasmercedes.com/PAC.htm

George Murphy Performance Analysis Co. 969 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Suite 258. Oak Ridge, TN 37830 865-482-9175

...and other people say you can buy some at Ace Hardware that will work.

I think I will take mine to an alternator shop and have them do it. Maybe I'll buy some brushes from George and then have the alternator shop do the job for me.

From what I read the motor is not designed to be taken apart and repaired but people do it anyway.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Power Steering Flush question...83 300SD

Yeah, looks OK.  Just insure you use Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Dexron/Mercon III or better, and NOT "Power Steering Fluid" (which is what nearly all other cars DO use...).

Well I have my answer :) and it wasn't pretty...but NOW I finally get how the return hose works.

I started out by sticking to (what I understood to be) the directions and went for the return hose connection at the pump. Buuuuut...that was an overly tight, nearly stripped, phillips screw that I just made worse.

So I gave the other end a shot, and of course ended up with P/S fluid all over (luckily I did get a drip pan under there) and splashed a bit around my clean fuel lines from the other day.

Oh well, lesson learned :) and it wasn't too bad, just a little messy (I caught it quickly), and the reservoir didn't really drain out all the way.

So I put it all back together, refilled with (cheap) P/S fluid, and I'll ask my mechanic tomorrow to get that screw off when Betty is in for her V-belt and driveshaft job.

Then I'll try it again, and now I know the order:

1) undo hose from pump
2) put *hose* in bottle
3) flush until clean and then empty
4) change return hose
5) change filter
6) refill + check

Look ok?

[diesel_mercedes] Power Steering Flush question...83 300SD

Hi there...

I was just going to replace my PS filter and the leaky return hose, but after researching (and not really knowing the history of this car) I figured I'd do a flush as well.

All the instructions I've come across mention to undo the return hose at the pump.  The details are a little unclear as to how to gracefully catch the fluid as you flush, and many folks comment that it does tend to gush.

Q: For the flush, can I undo the return hose at the other end and put that end in a bottle since I'm replacing the hose anyway? (assuming it will get soaked in PS fluid in the bottle)

I'm about to replace my fuel return lines, then run out to get more PS fluid (only got enough to fill the reservoir, now I want to do the flush...need more!) and then I'll finish up today with the PS maintenance.

Thanks in advance and happy weekend!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Timing Chains Etc.

Using synthetic oil will also greatly extend the life of timing chains or belts, just because of the reduced valve train friction.  They WILL need to be replaced at some point; they're all going to stretch to a point of timing problems, though it may take several hundred thousand, a million miles, or more....

I've heard from several shops, that if engine oil is changed right

new chains are not needed.
