[diesel_mercedes] Removing bearings from rear axle

My 67 Mercedes 200d has bad rear bearings. The rear axle is honestly weird and I'm not confident enough to tear in yet. From what I can tell it has a torque tube and design based on a De Dion axle. Does anyone have any experience with these?

How can one do " modifications to the gear ratio"? Max

I think the 85 w123 had a slightly higher rear end.  At least that is what the owner said about his 300D Turbo.  Lawrence Rhodes

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Sway Bar Bushings

Nate,

let us know how it goes with the sway bar bushings. I need to do that too on the front.

I've been taking pictures as I go along , it turns out this job isn't nearly as bad as I initially thought .

[diesel_mercedes] An Oddity

I was down talking to Victor and he had in a W-123 300CE that when new , had been sent to a customizing place and made into a Convertible .

He said it had been sitting about ten years and had badly gummed up fuel lines between the tank and the engine compartment , this is actually a fairly simple thing to fix although it's amazingly time consuming and if not done 100 % , will result in a clogged fuel injection system and poor running .

The car looked O.K. , the black interior was a bit beat up as are most 30 + year old rag top interiors .

A few days later I saw it heading to Altadena on a flat bed carrier so I guess he or the customer gave up on it for now .

I certainly hope it doesn't get put behind the garage of someone's house to deteriorate ~ that's the fate of too many older convertibles , I know having saved quite a few , always rusted out floors from sitting .

[diesel_mercedes] Final Drive Ratio

It depends on the typ of rear drive .

In Mercedes it's very simple , just replace the final drive unit with one from a Junk Yard having the ratio you desire .

In the case of my elderly LBC's (BMC products, all)  , the rear axle has a removable center section often called a ' pumpkin ' or ' chunk ' ~ in both cases these items are usually never scavenged from junkers before final crushing so there's almost always plenty to choose from .

A good bit of labor involved but no real technical expertise necessary .

The reason it went that low is because he is a true believer.  Knows these cars and will never use WVO to run them.  He just likes them,  got a better example from 83 so the canister problem is gone & he has a baby coming so mom had something to say as well as they seem to be doing well financially.  If it didn't sell they were going to donate it.  But I did mention it on three lists...it sold the next day.  Lawrence Rhodes....
