[diesel_mercedes] '84 300SD Sylvia - Glow plug light glows (and glows, and glows, and glows)

It has gotten cold enough here in northwest metro MA that Silvia is starting to act up again....lately, the glow plug light refuses to go out....and me thinks this means they're glowing while the engine's running and draining the battery at the same time. Putting a voltmeter on the battery when the engine is off - it's 12.0V. Start the car and it's closer to 11.5V @ 1500 RPM with the glow plug light on while engine is running.....when the light finally decides to go out, voltage goes to about 13.3V at idle and 13.8 @ 1500 RPM.

I found this post below from someone who found corrosion in the pre-glow fuse box / relay. It's cold enough that I only had time/will to remove the cover, look for cracks in the fuse (none I could see) and re-seat the connectors to the glow plugs. No help. Anyone else tried what's described here (w/ success?). Anything else to try or diagnose?

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td/1476524-glow-plug-light-stays.html

Car starts, runs and drives fine (probably needs a vacuum pump) otherwise - I fear I'm ruining what are relatively new glow plugs....and the battery as it's probably not getting charged as much as it is being drained.

thx,

-Barton

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Engine Temp

82C or 175F. I've been hotter, but new radiators or citric flushes brought me back down to normal.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Automatic

Speaking of freeways, I want to say a good word for my onramp at Foothill & the #210 - it is one of the perfect sling shots allowing me to put it in "S" drive and punch it up to 70mph before entering the freeway. Not exactly an Italian Tuneup, but close to it. Maybe a Polish Tuneup instead.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] It's Chilly !

20 degrees F here. Been below freezing for about 5 days. SUPPOSED to be above freezing sometime today. Then all the dry snow will melt. Just in tome for the sun to go down. This is a college town. Most of the drivers can’t…   Bill in Corvallis, Oregon

37* F this morning .

'When it's cold , I use cotton gloves with plastic dots in the palms for driving gloves ~ they're warm and comfy , give me *perfect* feel and the plastic dots ensure the steering wheel cannot slip in my hands .

Not a cloud in the sky this morning , stars twinkling bightly even in the big city .

Oddly we have  a 40 % chance of rain , I surly hope no rain , I have suspension works to accomplish to - day before seeing my Grand Daughter , Son and Daughter in law .
