[diesel_mercedes] Troubleshooting '82 300D Climate Controls

The climate controls in my '82 300D haven't worked correctly since this car wandered into my life 5+ years ago.  I don't drive the car in sloppy/winter weather, so this hasn't been the biggest issue for me, but we're heading into a cold but dry fall, which is shaping up to be an excellent time to keep on chugging, so long as I can keep my hands from going numb while driving.

The monovalve seems to be working fine (I can regulate output air temperature) and I replaced the blower motor last fall because I was in a time crunch and didn't have time to fuss with changing out the brushes on the original blower.  Even then, though, I still had the standard symptoms that the climate control system will only operate in defrost mode.  The A/C is long non-functional, of course, due to an extended period of vehicular neglect prior my ownership; I'm just trying to get the economy modes to operate.

After returning from a short drive this afternoon, I pulled the climate control assembly this afternoon to inspect it for possible cracked solder joints.  A quick visual inspection doesn't show anything particularly dramatic on that front, though I'm going to re-flow all the edge connectors anyway.  However, I found that a portion of the system board was very warm to the touch, with circuit board discoloration where at least one relay is located.  Like I almost always do, except when I'm defrosting my windows, I run my car with the temperature wheel turned all the way down and the system turned off.  Shouldn't all power be cut to the climate controls in that mode? Should I actively be worried about a bad mechanical relay, or is what I'm seeing similar to the "always on" nature of the cruise control unit (at least until it fails)?

I hope to further disassemble the unit to expose both sides of the board tomorrow (ran out of time tonight).  Since this isn't the evil KLIMA I system and spares are generally available, should I start querying the list for a replacement set of controls (or boards) instead of potentially desoldering and replacing board components?

Thanks for any advice you can provide!

[diesel_mercedes] Vacuum noise.

Stuck my head under the hood yesterday chasing vacuum leaks, I was suspecting a bad brake  booster, but it was OK. Did find a pretty good leack, fixed it and lo' now my door locks work again. A trick that I used to let me hear leaks was to unscrew the main line at the booster, then with my finger on then off the end of the pipe, I could hear the changes in various noises.

One noise is a kind of buzz in the green vac valve just above the injector pump, or in the white plastic bit on top of the pump, is that normal? Is the white bit hard to swap? ( can manage the green one I think).
Thanks Tony

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Yahoo's Latest Screwup

Well, for the first time in 7 or 8 years I went to the group home page to see which end was up. Checked the "digest" box (instead of individual), and the "traditional" box (instead of the new, improved, fully featured box). Don't know if I will like things any better, but thought I would try it for one week, and if not, play around some more.

I'm ok also. Everything seems to work. I get individual emails.

I'm on digest for this group, which takes all the days emails and sends
them together, and it still looks the same as before. I've noticed that
the saved messages (conversations) on the site now have changed, yet
still are searchable.

[diesel_mercedes] My 1985 300SD Turbo diesel

I am thinking of selling my 300SD. 1985, no rust. I bought it in N. Carolina, and drove it home, near Niagara Falls. I have not driven it on salted roads. It is all original, but the radio.
It now has a CD player in it. The A/C worked till the compressor recently siezed up (I think) It started squealing and by the time I figured out what that noise was, the belt was shot.
The swithces in the console must have gotten something pilled in them, the rear windows don't open or close. The cruise tries to work, but will not settle in a even spot. Still, it drives great. The odometer is stopped @ 260+ K miles. When I bought it, the previous owner was running it on WVO. I am thinking I should be able to get $4500, or therabouts. I am not much good at attaching pics, but if anyone wants some, I can e-mail them.
Sid, near Niagara Falls
