Tom,

Thanks for responding.  I have a slightly different question from normal.  Mostly on this list we're looking for mechanical or body part information.  But I've discovered that the 560SEL (and maybe other 126 models) have amplifier modules mounted on the metal panel behind the rear seat.  These appear to drive the rear deck speakers.

I want to locate schematics and any available tech literature on these modules.  They look like an interesting balanced circuit design with symetrical pairs of TDA7232 preamps driving symetrical TDA7260 chips driving pairs of power transistors.

I'm thinking that they should be an easy install into my 300SD and maybe into Nate's 300CD, for better stereo.  But knowing basic stuff like what the connections are on the multipin connector is necessary.

Also as an old audio tech, I'm just interested in what makes them work.

The modules have a few rows of numbers on them.  The top row is 126 820 1489.

    The next row is 599.344-819.

The next row is 963 DB.

The bottom row is V 21208158 (one module) and V 21323105 (second module).  So I'm guessing the bottom row is the serial number.

If there is any information available on these I would be delighted.  Please let me know as soon as possible.

I hope your "going away" for the next two week is for vacation or something else good, rather than for any problem.

Cordially,
Tom Hall

Re: [Diesel-RVs] House WATER PUMPS

Mike,
Many water pumps that fail has to do with high back flow pressure from the hot water heaters. Hot water heaters need to have the top of the tank head space of air. If not, the heated water expands from heating and puts high pressure back on the cold water input to the tank. That higher pressure goes back to the output side of the water pump causing internal failure to the water pump parts. A accumulator tank on the output side of the water pump will compensate for the back flow pressure. Some folks have recommended a back flow valve attached to the input cold water line at the water heater. Most water heater manufacturers advise against that. Shurflo's high end pump line had high pressure back flow failure problems and the water pumps had to be redesigned so that the pump can withstand the higher pressure. All known vendor stock was to be replaced as of last August. Camping World now has the new designed pumps in stock. You can tell the new design by the pump
housing. Shurflo warrentee's their high end line for 3 years. Aquahot equipped coaches do not have that problem. Chuck B

RE: [Diesel-RVs] House WATER PUMPS

Usually it's the pressure sensor that goes out. You can buy rebuild kits
for most pumps. Get the pump model number and order the rebuild kit from
your local West Marine or Chandlery. Not hard to do at all.

Didn't anyone see this ? I was checking my eyelids for holes in font
of the Telly when the announcer made a ' teaser ' : Fillup for .25
CENTS a gallon ? coming up next ' ~ that woke me right up .

It turns out there's a gentleman in Wellsley , Ma. who has a cherry
bronze turbo Diesel wagon and he's converted it to run on fry oil he
gets for free and filters in his garage , the primary particulate
filter looked like a gym punching bag (the BIG hanging typ like in
high school) , when he popped the hood it was clean as a whistle , ran
well too .

I guess the segment has been in the can for awhile as they showed them
outside with dry green lawns and it's all snowed in there right now .

OT Copyright (was: Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: CD's, Manuals, etc)

Tom,

This is off topic but I feel you are out of line to lecture someone who is just getting by economically  that they should send more money to your multi-millionaire client.

Just because he is the lucky recipient of the happenstance that the founding fathers created a legal framework he could use to charge others for something he does and that Disney's lobbyists were able to buy some Congresscritters to extend that framework, does not make his legal claims into a moral position.  If someone wants to copy a DVD, the legal structure you use for a living does not make his entertainment choices immoral.

That you might win a legal case does not make the losing side of the legal game a moral condemnation of the person.

Let's get back to diesels.

Rodney,

I wouldn't presume to advise you on Admiralty Law, which is the only category of law I noticed you listed under by the Long Beach Bar Assn.  Not entertainment, intellectual property or copyrights.

It's a touchy subject right now, particularly with the Writers' Strike continuing.  I have clients who make their living by writing and/or performing.  None of them are real thrilled that modern technology makes it possible for anyone to copy their work and leave them unpaid.

There is room for "fair use", and for sharing manuals and other books.  But outright copying and distributing the copies, which appears to be what you were originally offering, goes beyond either fair use or sharing.

You may have a philosophical contempt for private property, or the rights of creative artists, or just for those people who write poor, misspelled, overpriced instructions.  But as an attorney, you should know better than most people that the law does not permit one to act on personal whim.

There are rules.  We are required to stop at traffic lights, even when we think we're fast enough to cross the intersection ahead of oncoming traffic.  We are not permitted to put ag fuel in our over-the-road vehicles, even if the gropenator is going to reduce the number of inspectors and increase our chances of getting away with it.

Individuals have the right to start and run their own businesses, for their own profit (or loss).  If that business is writing really bad instruction books for car repairs, the business may be subject to public criticism and advice not to buy the product.  But just because someone feels that the product is poorly made does not give that person the right to copy the product and sell or give it away in competition with the business that originated the product.

One of my clients was nominated for a 'Best Actor' Oscar this morning.  That client invests his time, energy and creative skill into transforming someone elses (sometimes his own) writing into theatrical presentations.  If everyone could just rip-off his performances with their home DVD writer, he, and the hundreds of other people involved in making his films would lose their income - lose their ability to create the performances, and deprive both them AND the audience of the opportunity to pursue their own interests.

Why should any individual's desire to lash out at a business they don't like be a justification from stealing the food from the mouths of the people who created that business, or the products from the customers who don't share the contempt of the critic?

Copyrights have a purpose, just as traffic laws do.  Why should any of us be permitted to pick and choose which laws we want to obey and which we want to flaunt?

Re: [Diesel-RVs] House WATER PUMPS

Mike,
I do not think you have much choice. I have only had one water pump go out in my 39
years of RV'ing. That was my fault as I forgot to turn off the pump when I opened the
drain on the water tank. My surflo pump froze last winter, again, my fault, as I did not
drain it properly. I got a rebuild kit for the pump end and no problem. It is a Shurflo.
Now, my pump of choice.

We had the old furnace problem with our 94 Vectra. You might check the Surburban web site.We live in Texas so we downsized one size to prevent short cycling..Our smaller unit fit perfectly. I feel sure there may be a size that was overlooked. JBR

taller and would bump into the reefer door, instead of fitting
underneath. So a call to PPL and I find ALL the new Suburban NT
furnaces are this size now, regardless of BTU rating.

About the only one they make that might fit is a SF-35 a low profile
unit about 2" shorter than what I have now. But about 5 inches wider
also to make up for it. Looking into the spot the furnace is
installed; shows a water pipe sits in some of those 5 inches. So shy
of re-plumbing the water line with those swagged on fittings the RV
makers use, the other furnace won't fit either.

I looked at Atwood furnaces to see if they have one that would fit,
but their's look about the same. So can't just switch brands.

So at the moment have sent the new one back to TX and maybe will buy a
motor & fan for the old one, about $200 ( 1/3 the cost of all new
unit). Bummer is PPL may well charge a restocking fee of $130. So
don't know if I'd order the motor from them, unless they waive the charge.

Any ideas as to maybe a place that still sells the older obsolete size
furnace? Or maybe some other work around solution?

Re: [Diesel-RVs] C7 over heating. Now it's me that is hot!

Bob,
I have a Cummins 8.3. As I said in another note, the belt tensioner is bolted to the
T-stat housing... and rechecking my book, the alternator also has to come off to replace
the thermostats. Seems when Cummins decided to add accessories to the motor, everything
has to be bolted to the t-stat housing.

[Diesel-RVs] Re: C7 over heating. Now it's me that is hot!

Russ, I am with you, even with a rear radiator,$700.00 for belt
replacement is way too high! 5 years ago when I retired (Had my own
transmission shop)I was rebuilding rear drive transmissions for that
kind of money!! and as far as using flat rate, that's not the
problem ,flat rate protects you from greedy shops that otherwise
would charge whatever rate they choose. If you are a tech that is
worth $100.00 an hour, which there is when it come to some very
technical repairs, why are you out there replacing belts and oil
changes? It's like Paying the guy that washes your car the same as
the guy who rebuilt your engine or trans ! just my thoughts Ron ---

Re: [Diesel-RVs] C7 over heating. Now it's me that is hot!

Russ,
Could it possibly be that most of these shops now have computers that have software to determine the bill according to the work performed? I know at most Cummins shops I been to the tech loads in the work performed and the parts used. The computer then generates a bill.
If so, may be only the shop manager can over ride the costs. Chuck B

Re: [diesel_mercedes] O.T. : Moto Physics

Shucks - we retired paper boys know all that stuff. And, as a past skate boarder (tried it once) who bounced onto his ample bum in the kitchen, I can also verify that 250 pounds hitting the deck is a lkot different than my paperboy weight of 100 pounds - I think it is part of Isaac Newton's apple dropping business.

T'was an older gentleman, true...
The physics are simple, once you get your head wrapped 'round 'em. The
average (read all) motorcycle has it's centre of gravity somewhere above
ground, usually some couple of feet. That's why most fall down without some
form of support. Now, when riding, that 'support' is the input from the
rider and the gyroscopic force from the rotating wheels. Rider input is in
two forms - leaning and moving the handlebars. Leaning is not too effective
on a bike weighing 500 pounds or more, but it is how many riders steer,
they're just unaware of it.
Moving the handlebars is much more effective, but you need to be aware of
what you are doing to effect the appropriate response.
The technique called counter-steering is the way bikes are turned 'round a
bend, and it works thusly: When you push on the right bar, the wheel twists
to the left (solid connection twixt 'bar and wheel, we hope...). However,
the bike leans to the right, and thus turns right. Why?? Turning the wheel
to the left moves the contact of the tyres to the left of the bike, in
effect moving the lower portion of the bike's weight to the left. Since the
centre of gravity is high, this makes the bike lean right. Think of you on a
skateboard (think of it, don't DO it!!). Now, whilst looking forward,
suppose someone kicks the board forward as well. You land on your bum, no??
That's because your centre of gravity is also high (loss of hair does not
lower the centre appreciably, I know by personal experience).
Those are the basic physics of steering a motorcycle. Works the same on a
bicycle, but harder to tell, as leaning a 17 pound bicycle is slightly more
effective than the same lean effort on a Gold Wing...even with empty bags...

Re: [Diesel-RVs] C7 over heating. Now it's me that is hot!

Recently I had to have the thermostats replaced in my Coach. While at it, I had the shop
(an independent truck repair shop) replace the belts, just for my mental security. He
charged me to do the belts on top of the thermostats even though they had to come off to
replace the t-stats. I ended up with a $500 bill including parts.
His explanation was, they were "new" belts (like they have to be specially bent to
fit the pulleys?).
I am looking for a better shop.... at least one that I feel is honest in pricing.
