RE: [Diesel-RVs] Big Sur

Decided just to drive up to Monterey, and spend two nights there.

Subject: [Diesel-RVs] Big Sur

I spend a couple of weeks a year in the Monterey Area....if you are
not married to the idea of going through Big Sur, but wish to visit,
may I suggest:

1. Laguna Seca Raceway has a nice campground. I have stayed there
and watched races for nearly 30 years now. They have water and power
and a dump station.

2. You can drive easily to Big Sur and back and enjoy the park within
a single day.

Then you can also make day trips to Carmel, Monterey and Santa Cruz,
and other nice places. Capitola is a nice day visit with restaurants
on the water. I installed Automated Teller Machines all over the area
and one of them was in Capitola back in the 1990's. It was busy.

Anyway, the drive down Highway One is perfect for Sport Bikes....but,
in an RV, it is twisty but certainly not impossible. The issue is
that during the winter, they have problems with run-off and road closures.

[Diesel-RVs] Re: Need an idea

Joerg, YOU DON'T, Unless it is heated you will have trouble. MOST if
not all rigs that use waste veggie oil circulate hot coolant from
engine thru veggie tank to preheat it. You also will find that you
cannot start engine on veggie oil, you will have to valve it so that
you shut down on diesel and then start on diesel. If you shut down on
veggie you will have a devil of a time on startup especially when
cold.
This is not simple operation, It takes a lot of engineering to
sucessfully use veggie oil. I would not do it in mine.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Re: Need an idea

Key is proper % of used oil to fuel.
Google 'Cummins Centinel System'
If the factory does it, you think there's any harm???

You couls always re-refine it to bio, but you don't have to.
And on older diesels like yours, there's no issue at all.

You use this drain oil to run your diesel engine?

How about the carbon deposits and all the other left over stuff

this oil leaves after being burned?

Have you done this for a longer time? What are your findings?

A lot of questions, because I am amazed that this obviously works.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Need an idea

There is a lot more to converting peanut oil to diesel fuel than preventing it from
gelling. Go to one of the sites that tell about making your own diesel plant. It also has
to be a lubricant and not plug injectors.

I saw last night on the Science Channel they had a heater in the
vegetable oil tank with a switch that changed tanks from diesel to
bio.
I ocassionally run filtered drain oil in my Cummins M11-450E+ at the
rate of 95% diesel to 5% drain oil. Cummins says that's okay. I don't
know if you can mix diesel with veg and how Cummins feels about that.

[Diesel-RVs] Re: RID-X

Chuck, I agree that short periods of idle are not good on engines. I
fire up, move to CG dump, Tilt coach and then dump and rinse. If in a
place for long periods I can use level sytem manually to tilt coach. I
suppose that when parked for long periods there would be a greater
chance of building a pile than if coach is moving.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Rid-X

DJ,

Many people like I that have used Rid-X successfully for years would
disagree with you.

I prefer the KISS method. Considering that we mainly boondock and empty our
tank every 10 to 14 days and have no tank problems at all, Rid-X does work
without a lot of extra work on our part.

It seems to me that people are misunderstanding what Rid-X does and
does not do in a Septic Tank.

It is for long-term use to build up friendly sewage digesting
bacteria. It would never sit long enough in a Black Tank to make any
difference.

Most RV treatments are good for odor control. Most RV-ers will fill
a black tank, in long term usage within 7 to 10 days anyway...in that
time Rid-X has not had enough of a duration to make enough bacteria,
if any, to make any difference in the break down of solids.

Here is what I have learned:

1. Use Septic safe toilet paper at least. Using RV toilet paper
has not been something we do because of number two and three below:

2. Mix a ton of water when flushing unless you do not have hook-ups.
In that way, you dilute the contents for far easier flushing.

3. If you have EX-Flush system, that introduces water into your black
tank, use it and use it long enough for your water to run nearly clear.

4. Every six months, take a cleaned paint pail (5 gallons) and
introduce this into your black tank with some digester. Drive it to
your campground and then dump. Or, you can use your EZ-Flush and
fill it but this is a dangerous way to fill your tank. Driving
around with fresh water in your tanks will really help keep them clean.

We use PineSol but I know there are folks here who think it is too
strong and I can understand that they buy into the RV industry's sales
pitch. To each their own.

6. Anyway, again, every six months, introduce a digester of some sort
and fill your tank full. This sometimes will clean up the tank
monitor contacts. I have heard all sorts of ideas about cleaning the
black tank including using rock salt, or ice, and then driving the rig
to clean them up. The salt idea seems novel but would it leave behind
remnants? I don't know....ice seems like a good idea.

PineSol, since I have used it, has cleaned our tank completely and we
never have water level sensor issues any longer.

DJ
