Here's the link to the funnel used for cv boot replacement.

John,

Stumbling around on You Tube, I found a Limey innovation:

<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=so9gMxzJH4k&NR=1>

Panda uses a plastic cone to allow the user to stretch the boot into place.  One user had trouble with the plastic cone.  Another user suggested using a transmission funnel instead of the plastic cone. And using motor oil as the lubricant.

If the MB boot is stretchy enough, we might have a solution.  If not, Panda sells on eBay.  Don't know if we can leap the necessary hurdles.

(Thinking out loud - if the MB boot is stretchy enough for the high dollar stretcher, it should be stretchy enough for the funnel.)

(Anyone know a good lubricant for rubber that is slipperier than motor oil?)

Sometime ago I saw a you tube video of a guy using a section of a funnel to slip the boot onto the axle. I may have saved the link...have to look for it.

Maybe for what I've done during _this_ one Blaise......

OTOH , as you know I have very good luck and am enjoying my little life immensely so I guess it all works out in the wash .

Stand by for my next Road Report as we're hitting The Open Road this coming weekend in my Coupe because SWMBO has decided the 240D is too slow (?!?) .

[diesel_mercedes] Pick-A-Part Junkyards ~ A Love / Hate Affair

So ;

Tom and I are out looking for 1980 Cadillac S & S Victoria Hearse parts and I decide to wander over & look at the Euro Section , of _course_ there's a really nice 1982 240D with shiny paint and only body damage was where some boob pried the locked trunk open , rummaged 'round & left , taking the radio & battery .

I mean ,this car looked _nice_ ~ a shiny recent re spray and receipts inside for a new alternator and battery in May 2011 were in the car and the engine was dusty but not oily as are the thrashers .

Anyway , as the trunk has been left open all the residual spare parts in it had gotten wet , the new glow plugs , gaskets and other usual DIY things carried by Diesel lovers , some boxes of brake pads were soggy cardboard and I mused as to why so many of us tend to put the old , worn out pads back in the box & save " just in case " or some suck foolishness ~ when I pushed them aside to look underneath the spare tire , the boxes fell apart and spilled out a full set of front and read brake pads .

A package of new turn signal bulbs too .

Sweet .

I then decided to have another look in the passenger compartment and found a dog bone wrench and a 1/4" ratchet , now I have one to keep in my junkyard tool bucket all the time .
As I said , _sweet_ .

This trip out I spotted a whole buncha good things I didn't need : new or freshly rebuilt alternators , glow plugs , V-Belts and coolant hoses , heater hot water valves , radiators plastic and metal and on and on...

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: newbie valve adjustment questions

Probably too late for this time, BUT, one thing you should know is that the gap tends to get SMALLER with time/miles.  This is true for these engines and other Mercedes SOHC engines.  So, better .001" too loose than too tight.

I always set mine a little on the sloppy side.  And inevitably, when it comes time to do this tune-up, there are some 3 - 6 valves that have tightened up beyond the specifications.

thank you Brian

The valves are all adjusted.

I have to replace a fuel return hose before starting the car. One was too short to allow the valve cover off and it ripped.

If one hose was rotted sufficiently to rip they're almost certainly _all_ rotten and ready to begin leaking & do you dirt .

Diesel hose is *special* so far only the German car partshaus and NAPA has ever had the correct stuff ,Pep Boys etc. sell similar crap but it'll soften up , swell & begin leaking fuel profusely in a few weeks , usually when you're far from home & wearing a nice shirt or have SWMBO in the car .

I always carry 1' of it in the map pocket .

Interestingly , the NAPA hose doesn't *look* right (no woven outer cover) but it's been on the car for a couple years now and never leaked a drop nor got hard nor blubbery.....

Tight (lessthan .002" ) valves will BURN ~ this is a very bad thing so take the time to get them right .

Tight valves also are the primary cause of hard starting .

Loose valves cause loss of power and excessive noise .

Using bent 14MM open end wrenches is the smart thing to do , you can buy them OnLine for less than the cost of having the Mercedes Garage do one adjustment the re use them as this important adjustment needs doing at least once a year .

Hello all

My understanding is that intake valves should have .004 inch clearance and exhaust valves .012 inch clearance (1978 300D)

Two questions:
1. can intake valves being under .002 inch ( I do not have a .001 gauge)
and exhaust valves being over .014 inch cause overheating?

2. Can the adjustment be made when the cam is not STRAIGHT UP ?
I am using the starter to rotate the engine.

thank you

I don't know about over heating, but with tight valves loss of power causing more pedal.Cam should be at 1 to 2 o clock.
