We'll see, I'll get to it once I'm home again .

This group provides a forum for owners and operators of diesel powered motorhomes and 5th wheel tractors to discuss mechanical issues, regulatory issues (US, Canada), ownership, insurance, campground accommodations, trip reports/suggestions, and other topics relevant to large RVs and the people who drive them.

Before going off to buy parts, I would dissect it. I'll wager your biggest problem is in the mechanism that pops the back of the door up, combined with crusty lubrication. The crunchy noise could either be a failing drive gear or perhaps a clutch skipping. Stiff operation would lead to both. There are shops that can reproduce most cables, like for parking brakes; especially if you have an original they can take the ends off of. Bill in Oregon

My '79 (W116) is doing the exact same thing, and has for years. One FINALLY showed up at the Denver U-Pull-N-Pay this past Spring, and I was able snag the whole assembly (and a bunch of other long-needed items) for cheap. I haven't yet opened my mine up, so I don't know exactly what happens to cause this....
It's good that you have spare parts. According to this tutorial, the cable may not be your entire problem.

Mine clunked pretty hard opening and closing last time I used it, so I know it needs something. Hopefully just lube.
I decided not to use the sunroof after that, yet maybe a good repair next year.
Maybe take apart a PAP car to see how it works, if I can find one.
