[diesel_mercedes] ALDA ADJUST OM617 - T

O.K., I turned the ALDA adjusting screw 1/4 turn CW and the idle is smoother and almost _zero_ smoke when leaving a dead stop .

I've driven it 390 miles since adjusting the ALDA 1/4 turn CW, there's nearly zero smoke when pulling away from a stop now *but* I have some diesel exhaust smoot on my rear bumper so maybe I need to pull and pop test the injectors .

We'll see, I'll get to it once I'm home again .

The fuel gauge is on reserve but no low fuel lamp yet and it lights when I still have 2 gallons left so I want to wait until it comes on before tanking up . SWMBO is frantic looking at the gauge, she frets any time it's below 1/2 tank .

The added on clear plastic micronic filter in the fuel return line is ever so slightly darker yellow than when new in the lower 1/4 of the medium, no visible crud at all yet, if I could I'd run it dry to see if any crud comes out when the engine dies as it usually does but I'll change it in a day or less, whenever the lamp comes on and I tank it up .

I spotted branded Diesel fuel for $3.39 / gallon, that's a great price for someone who lives in Los Angeles .

Before going off to buy parts, I would dissect it. I'll wager your biggest problem is in the mechanism that pops the back of the door up, combined with crusty lubrication. The crunchy noise could either be a failing drive gear or perhaps a clutch skipping. Stiff operation would lead to both.
I was very surprised to learn that the motor is in the trunk, but when you think about it, it makes good sense. It would be quieter and it would not require a lowered ceiling to make space. I have worked on Saabs ans Volkswagens over the years and everything is close by (no long cable), but they require a lot of space, which then kills headroom.
Reasonably priced grease, but it looks suspiciously like good old petroleum jelly, which I have used on a lot of things. One was as a lube for scale model slot cars.

My '79 (W116) is doing the exact same thing, and has for years.  One FINALLY showed up at the Denver U-Pull-N-Pay this past Spring, and I was able snag the whole assembly (and a bunch of other long-needed items) for cheap.  I haven't yet opened my mine up, so I don't know exactly what happens to cause this....

It's good that you have spare parts. According to this tutorial, the cable may not be your entire problem.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] sun roof advice

Mine clunked pretty hard opening and closing last time I used it, so I know it needs something. Hopefully just lube.

I decided not to use the sunroof after that, yet maybe a good repair next year.

Maybe take apart a PAP car to see how it works, if I can find one.
