Re: [diesel_mercedes] Timing is everything, almost

Go one more revolution of the crank.

Hey,

My car is in pieces right now. I had a leaky water pump that is now in.
I thought this would be a chance to set the injection pump timing. I
have the low pressure kit and the videos. The plunger and spring are out
of #1 port and the tube is on. No matter where I set the timing, I get a
steady stream of fuel. I tried rotating the crank and it never stops.
What am I doing wrong?

I found the problem, but only by accident. When I disconnected the vacuum line going to the stop valve, the pump make a clack and the fuel stopped right up. Set time with no further issues. No more smoke, climbs hills well, gas pedal is way off the floor when cruising now. Had to bend the pipes quite a bit to get them back on, so obviously moved it quite a bit. It was almost to the limit of motion pulled away from the engine and now its about midway. I'll bet it was 10 deg off.

I'm here to tell you, check the timing on your car if you have not done so already. But know that not a single video or tutorial I have read said a word about making sure the vacuum shutoff is open. Take the vacuum line off to avoid frustration. No need to take the valve cover off to find firing TDC, just remove the #1 glow plug and stick your finger over it while moving the crank. When you feel air being forced out, you know you are on compression stroke. Take all of the fuel lines off and don't put them back on until you have the pump cinched down. Attach to the injectors first, starting at the rear and working your way forward. Make sure they thread on in a relaxed way with no binding to ensure no crossthreads. Just snug them at first. Have all of the spacers completely off and reinstall only afterwards. To get the spacing for them just right, reloosen all connections slightly, then use a wide flat screwdriver blade, using a twist motion at the narrow spots to get them roughly parallel. Snug them, making sure they do not cut into the tubes, but grasp them at the narrowest points. Now tighten the pipes, then tighten the spacers well.

It might not be a bad idea to recheck tightness of everything after a first good run.

Never ran so good!

God back and re in stall the delivery valve spring .

When the valve gets old and weepy (poor sealing), you get this, I had the same issue and after installing the new spring setting the timing wasn't difficult, you just need to print out the instructions and lay / tape them on the air cleaner for reference .

? Will you be using the factory setting of 24 degrees or maybe a few more ? .

I'm currently running 27 degrees and when there's no other problems, the car runs very well indeed .

Thanx Bill but no ~ .

I need something I can read, I don't really have the ability to watch videos and I prefer 'cheat sheets' I can carry out to the car anyway, no Internet access where I do the work .
