This car has the desirable 'M' code injection pump and simply put , goes like a rocketship .

284 miles , mostly SWMBO driving around town , no AC used 'cause it's broken (again) .

OK, so I had half a tank of diesel, and my primary fuel filter, you know the clear one, started sucking air, bubbling like co-cola. I swapped the filter out with a new one, still sucking air. I figured it was one of the hoses and/or clamps. Swapped them all out, still sucking air. Now I'm starting to wonder if the metal fuel line is cracked or something. No fuel spots on the ground, no drips, but maybe it's such a small crack or hole that it's sucking air but not dripping. Oh crap, that thing is $250 and a beeyatch to install. So I thought I'd try a temporary replacement. Bought 15 feet of 1/4" rubber hose, started in the engine compartment, zip tied it to the fuel lines, jacked up the car, zip tied it all the way to the back, cut it to length, set up a connector, got my clamps ready, put a big pan underneath the fuel tank, pulled the rubber fuel supply hose (the one on the bottom of the tank) off the metal line so I could quickly swap it to the new rubber hose, hoping not to spill too much diesel. Expected a flood...nothing. WTF? Damn tank was empty! Fuel gauge sender unit center rod got corroded and stuck the float at half-way. I should have known I couldn't have really gone 1400 miles on half a tank of diesel LOL. Anybody need 13 feet of 1/4" fuel line? I am such a moron...

[diesel_mercedes] Discussion closed - Re: They LIED

Thanks Jim. I agree, the practical use of alternative fuels with diesel Mercedes autos is a welcome discussion here.

Philosophical/political arguments along the lines of "my fuel is better than yours", "fuel x is a government conspiracy", "fuel y kills puppies", etc. do not belong here. Heated opinions that don't have anything to do with diesel MB's.

I realize this isn't a black and white rule, so here are some guidelines. What follows isn't directed at you, Jim. It's for all group members.

DON'T POST
-----------
- messages that include words like "lies", "liar", "evil", "conspiracy", "hate", "!!!!", "Area 51", etc.
- messages written in all-caps
- messages that include obscenities, personal attacks, or a disrespectful tone

DO POST
--------
- experiences using alternative fuels with your diesel MB
- recommendations about fuel-related products, vendors, projects you have tried
- questions about modifying your diesel to use alternative fuels
- where to buy/how to make alternative fuels

I set up this forum as a resource for learning more about these great cars. I like to think of it as a coffee shop where we can drop in and swap stories, questions, and some laughs. 99% of the time, that's what goes on here. Unfortunately, sometimes people get emotional about stuff. And every once in a while, a crazy hobo comes in and starts screaming at everyone. Both situations create more work for me. So this is all I ask of our members:

1. keep it friendly
2. don't be that crazy hobo

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and being part of the group. And I'm with you on the vacuum.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Radius Arm bushing (trailing arm?) part number needed

It's called the strut rod and I'm sure you'll find in on ETY's site....

Pr Peach Parts , Buy MBParts .com etc.

If not , report back here and I'll give it a go next week .

Remember , this directly affects caster so have it properly aligned after you've replaced them .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : Kevin's 1981 300D

I found a guy about 40 miles from me who has every part I'll ever need.  He has  a mostly complete '82 300D with the same exact int/ext color combo as well as a few other parts cars.  Whenever we meet up, I'll be like a kid in a candy store!  The '82 has a nice interior including firmer seats which mine could use.  I'm going to get all the vacuum bits from tranny to valve cover to have on hand to make mine right.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Radius Arm bushing, part with 100 names

On the right track, but still need help.

I fount this on ebay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCEDES-W123-230-240-280-300-TRACK-GUIDE-ROD-MOUNT-KIT-/140491628961?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20b5f421a1&vxp=mtr#ht_3962wt_954

However, it states it does not fit an 80 300d in one place and it fits all W123s in another. Other sites show this same part number fitting. My car is an 84, but non turbo, W123.130 chassis, not a W123.133 (turbo)

Napaonline has the same part number for both, so doesn't AutohausAZ.
I was going to go with this ebay ad because it ships from NY and I should be able to have it in a couple days. I don't want to have to return it and delay the repair.

Can any Experts confirm that this part, 1233301335 fits both ?

Other names for the part Strut rod or guide rod bushing, Supporting joint (factor manual) for the supporting tube, and a couple others I don't recall.

Steve
Other odd things about my car
Front fender antenna, no sun roof, power front, manual rear windows.

This is the rod that goes from the A-Arm to the frame behind the front wheel. its the bushing at the frame that need replacement.

Now onto the bad. It will eventually need a passenger’s side lower ball joint as the boot is torn, and 3/4 of the window regulators are acting up. It also needs a new air cleaner housing as it’s broken at the bottom where the tube goes into the oil separator. It’s got potential to be a great car for the summer. It rides much better than the 240D, and is much quieter as well.

That's a very good question ! .

I've seen quite a few cut open and they all had the same innards , some just seemed to have more vacant space inside ~ I don't know why but I'd be *VERY* wary of cheapo AC parts ! .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Today, my Diesel let me down.

Chip ;

First thing , look at the intake screen , is it full of crud ? .

Then , look closely for fuel leaks from the flexible lines , both the return hoses and the cigar hose as any leak allows air into the system and causes stalling .

Hopefully this will be a simple fix , once you've found a leak and fixed it , remember to keep the RPM's up over 2,500 for at least three minutes to fully bleed the system of air ~ remember when I stalled my Diesel Coupe out in the street after changing the secondary filter & only idling it for 20 minutes...

[diesel_mercedes] today my diesel let me down, for a brief while

So, my CD died a couple of days ago. I changed the fuel filters this morning and I am as good as new.

I could not tell there was a single thing wrong with either of the old filters, but something was clogged somewhere.

I guess the vodka bath cleaning from Christmas finally gave up.

Up and running in Houston.
