Barry,
Someone has discussed this in prior messages.
The best I remember, the slightly later diesels had the same bolt pattern and there was a 5 speed available. Something like get the trans from a 89 300 diesel (the body is smaller, it used the 5 cylinder engine, but it came with an aluminum head - so you don't want the engine - just the trans.). That was just guessing - somebody please correct.
On American cars the bellhousing is different between the auto and the manual - so you might need to get a different bellhousing - also needed so you have a way to release the clutch.

That just what I'm trying to do, I would love to find the right web site to see what may be swappable if any one has any idea please let me know even if it's just a guess.
Sent from my iPadMy question would be is there a later model 5 or 6 speed gearbox that would bolt to to a 617 engine? Sure would be great to have a 300CD(T) with an O/D trans of some sort.

Sent from my iPadmy understanding is a manual (MBZ) trans will bolt to your engine. Of
course, changing torque converter for clutch/pressure plate. Some say you
have to consider if it is internally or externally balanced (the engine) for
this swap. Others report no difference in end result.
I'm sure others here have more knowledge, though, related to changing auto
for manual trans.
(I didn't want to say "tranny", know what gutter minds some of you are)
Good luck
Henry
