Re: [diesel_mercedes] engine swap off topic tranny swap

Barry,

Someone has discussed this in prior messages.

The best I remember, the slightly later diesels had the same bolt pattern and there was a 5 speed available.  Something like get the trans from a 89 300 diesel (the body is smaller, it used the 5 cylinder engine, but it came with an aluminum head - so you don't want the engine - just the trans.).  That was just guessing - somebody please correct.

On American cars the bellhousing is different between the auto and the manual - so you might need to get a different bellhousing - also needed so you have a way to release the clutch.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] engine swap off topic tranny swap

I have seen in photos, and heard of 5 speed trans. in some Euro 300 series
IIRC123's.
I missed one in Sacramento about a year ago, a fellow was building a rally
car using a 123 and 5 cyl w/5 spd.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] engine swap off topic tranny swap

My question would be is there a later model 5 or 6 speed gearbox that would bolt to to a 617 engine? Sure would be great to have a 300CD(T) with an O/D trans of some sort.

I'm sure others here have more knowledge, though, related to changing auto
for manual trans.
(I didn't want to say "tranny", know what gutter minds some of you are)

Good luck
