Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Goodbye 71 220D

Keep in mind that there are a few of us with the W116 300SD, in all ways but the engine the same as your 280SE.  I'm well versed in the Klima I (aka Chrysler's AutoTemp II), as well as the rest of your car.  I'm sure you can contribute to me, too.

Mark, 1979 300SD

Thanks Nate.  You know I did get the servo to work so it adjust the inside heat on this gasser.  (Turned out to be loose tubes to the servo).

That's too bad Mike ;

You prolly could have made some decent $ by parting it out .

You needn't leave , there's a very diverse group of enthusiasts here , enjoy your Gasser and ask questions as necessary .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] I Guess...

Naw, not really.  Certainly not from the 722.0/1/2 (the four bolt pan, introduced with the W116 "S-Klasse" in 1972).

A case could be made that their first, in-house automatic, introduced in 1961 for the W111/W112 and used in the W108/109, W113 (SL) and the legendary W100 series, was more like the original, cast-iron Hydra-Matic (as opposed to the later alloy "Hydramatic").  It used what DBAG called a "hydraulic start-up clutch"; not a torque converter, but more like the fluid coupling the Hydra-Matic used.  Like the old Hydra-Matic, the "start-up clutch"/fluid coupling was largely out of the power picture in the two higher gears, thus aiding both performance and fuel mileage.

Previous to all this, a Borg-Warner unit was offered on the 300-series (VERY rare in these cars), as well as the ill-fated "Hydrak" system, a fluid coupling mated to a manual transmission.

An interesting summary of MB's automatic offerings can be found here:

I now can hear the whining of the tranny gears as it works its way up and down , I was recently told the Mercedes four speed automatic was heavily cribbed from GM's most excellent Hydromatic , is this true ? .

So I used Opera to access Yahoo for this post, and apparently it may be an issue with Firefox talking to Yahoo  that needs to be resolved.

I've been having issues with the YAHOO Group page so maybe that is the issue.  But, seeing as I am having to drill out my broken plastic drain plug today, here is a test post  - well, nope. I tried to copy & paste another video URL and it don't do it either. So, I may have to figure out whats up between my computer, my mouse, and the Yahoo Group page. Don't have this issue with other programs I am running. Maybe after 10-15 years I should uninstall and reinstall Yahool.

[diesel_mercedes] I Guess...

Fall is here at long last .

Last night I only had one window open and I didn't feel the need for a blanket until 03:00 .

Getting up it was wonderfully crisp and clear @ 04:00 , the Pups came to say hello then went back to their

warm pit of old tarpaulin they'd pulled off the Motos to make a sleeping nest .

The old 'Benz really likes the cool pre dawn to roar down the serpentine Pasadena Freeway in the fast lane , passing all the sleepy headed early risers , windows open , no radio playing ~ I just got new hearing aids (thanx Pop/Lorina) so I'm hearing more detailed mechanical noises than I've heard for over 10 years .

These cars are quiet inside but not so much to other Motorists .

Even at idle it clatters softly , a nice Mechanical Cacophony I can listen to for the rest of my life .

I now can hear the whining of the tranny gears as it works its way up and down , I was recently told the Mercedes four speed automatic was heavily cribbed from GM's most excellent Hydromatic , is this true ? .
