[diesel_mercedes] Re: New to Forum

Exciting ;-) I'm on the MN/WI border near the Twin Cities and just this past weekend showed my 220D at a large car show. That is correct. A 220D at a car show. It garnished a lot of praise for it's condition, but no trophy. How is one to compete against a body off restoration of a 1959 300 SL convertible. Certainly not with the least expensive Mercedes ever imported to the U.S.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Something to ponder about: New DIY cars?

I have a w140 m104 gasoline engine, its easy to work on the engine. However door panel, and electronics can be unforgiving. The w140 diesels are junk, unless you have a europeon one.

Well, the old benz cars are getting less and less as the years go by. Now we have to start thinking about the newer models( W140, W202, W210, W220, W215, W203, W211). But are they DIY as far as maintenance goes? Have a look at this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ElrE4P878E

[diesel_mercedes] Autozone Videos

FYI - I have recently run across a number of DIY videos similar to the MercedesSource videos, but more generic. Here are a couple of sites:

and there are others you can search for - never hurts to have too much information.

[diesel_mercedes] Different types of R4 a/c compressors?

OK, thanks for the info, guys.  I have found a clutch at rockauto.com that is supposed to fit my a/c compressor (according to their database).  It is R4 clutch part number 48297.  However, the photo shows a clutch that has six bolts around the perimeter.  I think that clutch is a later style and I am not sure if that will fit my compressor.  My compressor does not have the clutch with the six bolts around it.  Anyone know?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] RE: R4 a/c compressor CLUTCH ?

I just picked up a rear view mirror on ebay - lots of strange things being peddled there, Also, Kent at Mercedes Source has a lot of used parts that you can look at vias his website.

Anyone know where I can get a clutch only for an R4 a/c compressor?  New, rebuilt, used...  I live in Washington DC area - no PAPs near me...

[diesel_mercedes] DIY Turbo Repair

It looks to me like if you buy the all inclusive kit(s) from Mercedes Source including the tools , then follow his book of instructions to the letter , it isn't that complicated ~ Ken suggests doing it with the turbo still bolted to the engine so you're not fighing it rolling 'round on your work bench or floor.....

Thanks, maybe I'll try this job one day soon...  It sounds like one of those jobs I'd get halfway into and then wish I'd never started.

The impellers seemed fine, no nicks or damage.
I used plenty of "Bead Blaster" and cut the head off a bolt with a grinder. I didn't get the special tool kit, though there are snap rings deep inside the turbo body that need replacing, and it was a PITA with just 2 ice pick tools. My snap ring pliers weren't long enough. If I was going to do another I'd make some tool for that.
