Caitlin ;
If I'm writing too much , say so and I'll stop .
Sooner or later , you're going to have a cold no start in New Mexico , the battery will appear to be dead but it'll only be under charged .
This is where the voltage regulator comes in : you needn't $pend $50 on a crappy rebuilt alternator that won't charge properly , just buy a $20 Bosch brand # 1 197 311 023 voltage regulator and pop it in whilst parked at the curb and VIOLA ! the lights will be brighter and the car will start easier....
BTW : look up " cold starting drill " in the older messages and memorize it or print it out and tuck above the driver's side sun visor ,you're going to need to follow it *exactly* as soon as it gets below 40 ° .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : 300CD Sports Coupe
Mercedes says they never made _any_ with manual tranny .
However , this is the second one I've seen , same year , same color , same interior so maybe some Dealer or M-B NA made up a few ? .
That rust is serious .
I'd think this to be a $1,500 car at best .
The last one was a Ca. car from new , someone junked it to Pick-A-Part where some a$$hat kid found it for $500 & kept quiet about it until they put it in the rows (' just another crappy old Mercedes ' ) and then he yanked the tranny he didn't even want out of it....1
Sigh .
Sometimes I hate kids .

Unwired Tools now has a cheaper , not as fancy but gets you heat alternative to the $500 one .
FWIW , making the heat and AC work on your 1980 TD , will co$t you _WAYYY_ over $500 trust me on this ~ I'm a Journeyman Mechanic and a cheap a$$ Yankee Farm Boy and I only barely made it .

Too much money for me with shipping and all but interesting car. Needs a
little "spiffing up" but, overall, I LIKE it!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Gremlin Hunt in 83 300SD
It's two possible causes. You may not have to pull all the fuses again to test the regulator. But you had a good test setup with the light in the ground path of the battery. An ammeter is even better because if it is a light it will shine full brightness with an ammeter. Those little red meters from Harbor Freight are not bad for the money. $3 or $4 and throw them away when they break or need a battery. But it's an easy test. Put it in the ground path of the battery like you did with the light and put it on the 10 amp setting first and see if pulling the alternator plug makes a difference. Try it first without pulling the fuses. Bogy. --- On Tue, 11/8/11, CaitlinDean <tinymachine@gmail.com> wrote:
