Re: [diesel_mercedes] Sylvia- 1984 300 SD - could this be the (beginning of the) end?

Barton,

Following up on Mark's question:

I think Nate says that usually vacuum problems are just a matter of isolating sections of the  vacuum system and tracking down the leaks.  There may be no need to replace or rebuild the pump.  Check Nate's procedures in previous posts.

(Starts something like - pull the hose off the pump and connect a vacuum gauge.   Crank up the car and let it idle.  If the gauge shows over 7# vacuum, the pump is good.  Go on...(Use Nate's procedure - I was just guessing))

Had Sylvia into the local shop for a run down on the broken wiper transmission/carriage and to track down a vacuum link - oh, and also a quick fix for the temp sensor lead which recently detached itself from it's wiring. The diagnosis (from the shop's point of view) is to replace the wiper transmission w/ a used part ($250.00), that I need to replace the vacuum pump ($375), and about 5 hours of shop labor (4 for the wiper assembly alone). Total parts, labor and tax is estimated at $1600.00 - which is *way* more than I want to put into this beast right now. (Maybe had it been trouble free for another year, then maybe...). So, I know it's oft quoted, most expensive car you'll never service, or the cheapest car you'll own if you DIY. I'm pretty sure I can do these things on my own, modulo parts and time.

The point of this post? Probably most of all to moan and whine - then to shamelessly ask if anyone has a spare wiper transmission? I knew I should have taken it out of the donor car, but as I said before, ran out of the all too rare spare time to do it before the wrecking truck came to take it to the atom smasher.

Have started looking online - one or two sources claim to have used wiper mechanisms, have not made any calls or inquiries thus far.

I can't see (much) wisdom in installing a salvage vacuum pump, but think I've read/heard of some people rebuilding them. If the remove/replace procedure isn't too hard, I'm perfectly fine with fitting a new one, or attempting a rebuild if it can be done. It's the wiper assembly that has me most worried - in terms of time to locate one, cost of a used unit (new from MB is $650 list), and whether I'll get it right the first, second, or third time.

Depending on which way this goes, I'm almost ready to put this thing up for sale - and you can be sure this will be the first place it's offered - there's too many new parts in it to scrap it - but it would have to go someone who wants the car and knows how to deal with it. Still need the odo fixed and the locks working...low priority compared to the above....

Wish we had more PAP's with available inventory in the greater Boston area - might make this current predicament seem less vexing...

So that's it for now - thanks in advance for comments/advice/heckling from afar and peanut gallery input.

Aw, c'mon, Barton!  You and your brother did the engine swap!  You can tackle both of these projects yourself!

Any 126-chassis wiper transmission will work.  If you really can't locate one locally, let me know.  These wunderbeasts are still showing up in Denver-area P-A-Ps.  Maybe $30, plus shipping.

What made the shop think the vacuum pump is on it's way out?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Sylvia- 1984 300 SD - could this be the (beginning of t...

There are some steps that you MUST take, if you are going to DIY it, BEFORE you get into buying parts.

Figure out for sure, on your own, what the problems are.

The vacuum pump swap out is dead simple.  My 300SD is running on a P-a-P one, now, while the old one waits for a rebuild.  (Thank you Nate.)  The rebuild is dead simple - a matter of a couple of valves and new seal.  I'm pretty sure that kits are available, but I haven't gotten around to ordering one yet (don't want to until the old pump is "properly aged").

But Nate has posted the vacuum color code.  So you really MUST test, and confirm that the pump is actually bad, before replacing it, THEN discovering that what you really have is leaks.

I haven't done wipers on my SD (thank goodness).  But I have on various other beasts.  It isn't usually hard, ONCE you figure out how the bits are stuck into what usually seem like impossible places.

The wiper motor removal and reinstallation is covered starting at page 1850 (section 82-0680) of the Mercedes Chassis and Body service manual (vol 2) for 126 vehicles.  In the drawings and instructions, it is 3 screws, and comes out with the mechanism.  So you pull the whole thing, then sort out what is wrong.  The service manual is, or was until recently, available on CD (harder to get grease spots on a CD than on a paper manual, like I have).  It has to be money well spent.

OR, you see the wiper plug, get a spare from the P-a-P yard, and make up a test cable, so you can control it yourself, and see whether it is working in place, or which part is failing.

Last I heard, they were hiring nice guys to work in auto shops, but not Mensa members (even in dealer shops).  So if they can do it, so can you.  Heck, even I can do some of these things, and I'm only an attorney.

[diesel_mercedes] '77 240D parts for sale

The '77 240D I just bought has great parts and is a low mileage car.
I am selling parts off of it since I only wanted the drive train to put into something lighter.
I am about half way between Charlotte and Raleigh North Carolina.
I posted pictures as '77 240D in Charlotte NC
I am very reasonable on prices.
Front fenders are bad and windshield is pitted pretty bad. Most other parts are good. Has re-manufactured alternator that i will sell as well as radiator and AC condenser.
