Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: V-Belts

Speaking of dead alternator stories Jasper and I once drove from Reno non stop all the way home(900 miles, never turned off the engine). It was a Sunday and I could not find a Smuchcks to replace the alternator. Did not have a battery charger either. We stopped in LaGrande and bought a battery, drove till the lights went out, pulled under lights, slopped in the new battery never turning off the car and then drove home. Got home around 3 AM with bright lights and a spare battery for the tractor. These cars will run with no battery. Max

All this talk about V belts reminds me of when my harmonic balancer tore off my crankshaft on the #210 freeway around 11:00pm and I drove home with all the belts off. Power steering was gone, fan blade function was gone,  as was any charging of the battery - but it was drivable and we survived to run another day.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] V-Belts

You're neglecting the inherent rotational friction in the compressor clutch bearings and the drag caused by moving the belt through the air.  Oh, and I almost forgot the drag caused by bending the belt around the pulley as well as the frictional drag caused by the belt attaching itself to the pulley and detaching itself again at each rotation.

But , _why_ ?  .

Cutting off the belt serves no purpose ~ it doesn't save any power etc....
