I suspect that there will be some owners who will say that they have never had the problem. What's their story?

OK, now I had to watch more episodes to see what you're talking about.

[diesel_mercedes] Status of Mary, Martha, & Jane Doe

Mary (1983 w123 turbo 300D) - Took her in for complete front end work which included everything but the kitchen sink for a cost of $3,600. Problem is the people changed the brake vacuum booster out and then could not get the vacuum lines straightened out so I had functioning brakes. Rather than flog that horse I will work it out myself.

Martha (1983 w123 turbo 300D) - Developed a sudden a sudden fuel delivery miss about six months ago. If you are following the Digby videos it is a similar situation. Martha is the car that was rear ended when we got to Washington. It was a perfect strike so Martha is otherwise functional - except for the Digby issue. If it turns out that Martha has a similar cylinder issue, she may turn out to become a parts car too. Engine + body repair =s more money than her 300,000 miles is worth.

Jane Doe (1983 w123 nonturbo 300D) - Picked up for her rear end replacement for Martha for $500). Towed and Parked Jane Doe and have not done anything yet. Previous owner pulled it from a local scrap yard for its front seats so I have it as a donor car, but may fire it up to see what the engine sounds like.

1985 Mystery Car - Sitting outside a repair shop for several months. Got to stop in and see what that is all about. Might be abandoned or something. Saw some high end cars (Rolls Royce) in the yard so might be interesting.

Anyway, my pocket book has taken a hit so I will proceed slowly.

Brian in drizzly PNW with
Mary, Martha, and Jane Doe

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Axles? 300D

Fine! Just don't back up.  At little over a $100 rebuilt axles particularly by Cardone  are the way to go.  If you are masochistic, you can change the boots by yourself, but the internal parts can be more problematic.

Once upon a time, when I had the dreaded "whang, bang, clang" experience of an axle joint going bad I remember seeing one of MercedesSource's videos where he reversed the axle and lived another day. Apparently, the wear on the joint only affected rotation in one direction.

I sure you've heard the definition of insanity. " doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result"

I took BART to Richmond once - never saw any cool things, only thugs on street corners.
