What is strange is that when my wife and I met in 1969, we both had matching 1968 white Beetles. Now, in 2017 we drive matching 1983 Desert Tan 300d W123's.

At least take some comfort in her being wiling to drive an old VW.......

I went back for a second day of cleaning and worked until after sun set, still not finished ~ the oily old mung is like taffy .

At least I discovered a better de greaser but the work remains the same, not really hard just time consuming and repetitive .

Yesterday I over slept due to sore shoulder and when I arose with the sun it was raining here in Sunny So. Ca. so I took the day off .

It's still raining to-day Wednesday 12.22 , might rain until Christmas Eve, we'll see .

I've had several 1968 Beetles, that was the last year for swing axle transaxles in North America .

[diesel_mercedes] Modern Diesels

I have now seen a few Mercedes 'Sprinters' and they seem to go 300,000 + miles on one engine so they're prolly pretty good .

A buddy bought a battered old Sprinter and used it to haul Racing Motocycles and do chase duty on Moto events, it looked fairly rough (dents, peeling cheapo respray) but seemed to be very reliable .

I think I'll keep my W-123's .

For one thing, there is a computer between you and the engine. That changes the whole game. And one of the things they can do is change the injection timing. If they wait till farther toward top dead center than these om617s do then they can inject into hotter air. Plus they have a higher compression ratio to begin with. That computer is why they are quieter too. It's seems to be a lot to do with the injection timing. Just my $0.02.

Does anybody know how these new diesels start? My friend just bought a new Sprinter 4WD . He was here for a visit and in the morning it was like 2 degrees. He went out and turned the key and presto it started. No glo, no nothing, just like a gas car. How do they do this? If I had to start either one of my 240's like that, they would not. I can always get them started but it takes a while. Max
