RE: [diesel_mercedes] Re: 300DL W-123 Limo

Ah, but a closer look would reveal it's NOT NA (if, in this case, "NA" means Normally Aspirated).  The photo of the engine shows the tell-tale u-shaped tube below the air filter housing, indicating the presence of a turbo.  Also, the EGR can be seen, and it has the later cruise control, further evidence that this engine is at least a few years newer than the rest of the car.

Add to that, MB never made a LWB 300D.  (I'm pretty sure of that, anyway....)  In Europe, limos were considered working vehicles whose purpose was to make a profit.  The lower initial cost and on-going maintenance were valued more than the driver's comfort or convenience.  So, it was probably originally a 240D LWB, now with an OM617A dropped in.  Which, would make for a very interesting drive, provided it was done correctly....

Snip, snip

I was thinking about this today also. We have all owned many different kinds of cars and trucks in our lifetime. I started with a 1950 Oldsmobile but quickly added Chrysler, Ford, and other products ranging from a 1930 DeSoto on up to "modern" cars - all gassers, mostly v-8s, mostly big horsepower.  But in the end, they are all gone and I am content with two 1983 diesel w123's - with no desire or intent to do anything else. I mean that is like 50 or 60 cars and trucks over the years. How and why did I end up with only these two MB's? Well, some of it has to do with space (old age home now, no 3 car garage anymore). But a lot has to do with the Popular Mechanic philosophy of life. If you tinkered when you were a kid, and you were comfortable with fixing your bicycle, then wrenches were a part of your life. So it is more than "cheap" - it could be part of superior intelligence, and a desire to build better mousetraps.

On a slightly related subject I have noticed that the members of this group tend to the "frugal", a quaint Anglo-Saxon euphemism for cheap, which leads them to spend inordinate amounts of money in the perpetuation of an outdated, albeit bulletproof vehicle.  As is common with addictive personalities, they have fixated on the logical design, basic good looks and solid construction which leads them to overlook the fact that a modern vehicle can be obtained which will at least match the fuel economy and provide,  for a few years , a relatively untroubled experience.  As for me, Guilty as charged.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Driver Seat Repair

Check MercedesSource for their utube on seat repair. The first trick is to take the seat out and turn it over to see what is broke, loose, flumoxed. Most of the time it is just too many 300 pound butts over 25 years. The good news is that it is eminently fixable. DieselGiant (and others) have some good pics on pool noodle repair, but I think MercedesSource gets to the heart of the matter + they have utube video. They will sell you a "fixit" kit too, but hey lets help keep them in business so we can get more videos.

I'd sure like to know what kind of oil had been run in that engine. Quality synthetics live a very high temps, and are largely ashless when they give up..

You can check to see of the turbo is spinning by removing the u-shaped tube that connects the air filter housing with the intake side of the turbo.  Even at idle, the turbo should be spinning.

For further turbo checks, I would refer you to the w116.org website, where they've made available the service manual for the 116:

http://handbook.w116.org/engine_78_d.htm

Clicking on "Main Function Group 09" will bring up the service procedures in .pdf for the turbo.

And I swear the service information for the vacuum pump is in there, too, somewhere, but I can't for the life of me find it right now.  Could be a problem with the website (parts of it may have been washed away by flash floods, as the w116.org website is maintained by Aussies...).

I have the file for rebuilding the "double diaphram" pump, if that's they type you have.  Ping me offline and I'll send it to you, if you want.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Sylvia - 1983 300 SD - Major maintenance down under - "glowing" results (so far)

Questions for the day (apologies if asked/answered previously):

1). Is there any ad-hoc anyone can tell determine if the turbo is or is not working (given there's no turbo gauge like my 33 y/o Saab99)?

2). Are there tests of the vacuum pump operation that can be done w/ unit in the car, engine running?

thx,

barton

Don't test the turbo spin with your finger!  You should be able to hook a vacuum gauge to one of the ports on the line from the pump to the brake booster and get a reading.
