32mpg in a Soob??! I've got a '99 Forester that I keep around only for the rare few days when the snow in the Seattle area paralyzes my Mercedes. For me though I couldn't get better than 21mpg out of it if I drove it off a cliff. I suppose that having full time AWD and the wind resistance of a city bus doesn't help.

IIRC , many years of RR's came with GM 400 V-8's .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Injection Pipes
So ;
There I was , purring along in my Turbo Diesel Sports Coupe , ripping up the Pasadena Freeway and back down through Central L.A. again , passing every one , nothing but corn , BIG smile on my face .
Then I stopped in front of SWMBO's house and the shaking idle began.....
Phooey ~ I popped the hood to see # 3 fuel pipe is squirting Diesel Fuel in little spurts , I decided it was prolly not tight enough so I schelpped on down to SEARS & bought a nifty set of crowfoot flare nut wrenches (didja know Craftsman tools are now made in China ?) and tried to tighten it , no dice , so I removed it and the rounded sealing end looked a bit cruddy , broke out my wire bristle toothbrush and cleaned both ends hospital clean then blew the pipe out as any tiny bit of crud would have ruined my new Monark fuel injector , screwed it back on carefully starting each 17MM flarenut then finger tightening them before touching with the wrench , lit that sweetie off and as soon as I revved it once to bleed out the # 3 fuel pipe , she settled back into a silky smooth idle again .
It still idles a little bit too slowly so I tried to loosen the idle speed adjuster locknut with my new 14MM crow's foot only to discover it's too dang fat and won't clear the IP ! .
DAMMIT . what do others use to loosen this nut ? I don't want to round off the corners using a regular open end wrench .
Grr......

[diesel_mercedes] RE : Starter Woes
It's telling you it wants a new starter solenoid RIGHT DANG NOW ! .
Tom argued this with me and we tinkered every other damn thing on the car and it got back at us by dying in Washington State at night , when it was cold , far from home (you DO NOT change an OM617 starter on the side of the road) , blah blah blah.......
Do it now when it's cheap (you'll find a freshly rebuilt one with new solenoid @ P-A-P) or wait until it stops when you're out on the road with SWMBO......
BTW : NAPA has good quality Bosch typ solenoids .

Who cares ? I just want my parking space back .
I've been told I have a long history of building vehicles for others....
I usually sell at a dead loss but I enjoy the works and learning .
Buying a Diesel Mercedes for investment purposes is foolhardy to the extreme .
I stopped counting the $ when it _passed_ $7,500.00 .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: The Frankensteining of Great Cars
My father died and left behind a lincoln with the 350 ho engine. The interior of the car is a mess (my dad was a bit incontinent), but it has not one spec of rust in it and the motor is practically silent when it runs. So I'm not gonna change out the interior but I thought I might pull the motor and use it a kit car or something. It seems a pity to send it to the PAP; yeah I know it is not a Great Car. Is it possible to run the motor on a different platform and do i have to yank the Computer and all the controls, too? Is it possible to get a universal controller, so I can run the engine & tranny in a volvo wagon? I'd like to get one of those Shelby replicas but it is too much cash.
Mercs are great...just want to stay in the MB thread.
