Re: [diesel_mercedes] Major breakdown

Max, Don't give up the faith.. You can pull the window and wedge it for a temporary fix. Once the weather warms up, the window can probably be repaired with a few parts from PAP. That is manual window, isn't it. You may can just prop it for a temporary fix. And the real fix should not be hard (a pain in the neck but not too hard).. Good luck.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Brake Pad Dust

I wouldn't suggest the brake dust shields, as my car came with them, and
I lost my brakes on some mountain roads in NoCal. Never again! Not a
problem since I removed the brake dust shields.

For many of the older factory alloy wheels, brake dust covers are a good solution, but for the AMG wheels dust shields just don't look good and could affect brake cooling at high speeds. . He is taking another look at the new generation of ceramic brake pads to see if a workable solution can be found. As of April 25, 2012 he has installed ceramic pads on his 1990 300SL as well as his 1990 190 2.6 and will be putting them to the test over the next few weeks. Will they live up to all their promises and hype. Check back in 4 to 5 weeks..

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Is anyone online right now???

Max,

Get a grip.  My 300SD started slinging oil, about a quart a mile.  It turned out to be a cut hose to the oil cooler.  I patched it temporarily with a bit of gasket rubber and a hose clamp.  Ran it a few thousand miles that way before the new hoses got put in.

There are dozens of places that these engines can leak oil.  Nothing Trish says indicates a shot engine.

Maybe it is shot, but we don't have evidence of that yet.  Don't rain on her parade prematurely.

Oh NO, Kevin is DONE working on this car...for the big stuff.  He tinkered under the hood before I left camp tonight.  Plugged in a vacuum hose that was loose.  He'll do the brakes when I get them.  He'll put on the belt for the a/c when I get that.

I check the oil EVERY time I drive it, no matter how far.  OK, I didn't when I drove down the driveway the other day..I had to drive through the front pasture to the water meter to get the reading and I didn't want to walk through the tall grass...snakes ya know.

Car still leaks.  It seemed to have gotten better for a while.  It's still not as bad as it was in the beginning.

Oh and now I have chickens with oil on their backs!  Yesterday when I got home due to the high wind their coop door broke open and they were out and decided under the car was a good hang out!  I can't imagine that there was anything to eat under there that wasn't there before I parked and it's on gravel...they should have stayed in the grass where the zillions of grasshoppers are!

Trish,

DO NOT PANIC!  (credit to Douglas Adams)

Your chickens are covered in oil.  That means a LEAK, not bad rings, bearings, turbo or anything else.

We DO NOT KNOW what you have, but you don't say that it's smoking out the back, so let's concentrate on finding the LEAK.

Keep filling it up (yes, this is expensive, both in money and environmental damage).  When you have the time, get it up on a lift or on high jack stands (NOT a jack; NOT cinder blocks or 2x4s - Jack STANDS).  Then look around.  Clean everything and find where the oil is coming out.

The way you describe it, it sounds like volumes, so it is probably going to be pretty clear.

Good luck on the interview.  I hope that you get the job.  When you get the time, get under the car, find the leak and deal with it.  The engine is NOT going to blow up because you are pouring in new oil every day or two.  Letting the oil get too low will be a problem.

USE SYNTHETIC OIL.  It's much more expensive.  But it clings to parts much better, so you will have less damage from the oil getting too low.  The extra expense may mean the difference between low oil damage and dodging that bullet.
