I usually pull the plug in the relay box and check each contact to ground. If it's grounded it's good. Just be sure that you're testing the right ones, there are 6 contacts and obviously only 5 plugs. Also look at the fuse in the box.
A 1984 300SD definitely has parallel glow plugs. You can test them with a simple ohm meter. Like light bulbs, they will have zero resistance when cold and higher resistance when heated (test when cool). My glow plug light has been out for more than a year. I just haven't pulled the dash binnacle to check whether the bulb has burned out (370+++ miles).TomIn a message dated 12/13/2012 5:51:42 A.M. Pacific Standard Time, sunnyredhot@yahoo.com writes:
THE HARD STARTING DIESEL IS A 300SD 1984. AND THE GLOW PLUGS APPEAR TO BE WIRED IN A STOCK FASHION.

Cold weather also does play havoc with starting. I'll be changing mine out shortly - I keep a set of spares on hand. This time I'll ream out the pre-chamber as I think one or two of the glow plugs are getting contact with some carbon build up. Maybe not, but I would like to solve the problem of why Martha starts instantly and never has any glow plug issues, while Mary takes 15 - 20 seconds
