[diesel_mercedes] Grille Day

You alls may remember the druggie @$$hat beddies of the neighbor bashed the living crap out of the front of my Diesel Sports Coupe a while ago , they also side swiped it stem to stern .

I bought a  Uro brand new grille a while ago and tossed it in the trunk and to - day decided to stop grumping like an Old Man (even though I _am_ one) and install it .

This time I decided to use the whole thing , not reload the plastic and trim bits into a perfect German chrome surround , I -DID- take it apart and properly position the delicate aluminum strips they didn't bother to position correctly , leaving some scratches on the middle , vertical one and I replaced all the wretchedly cheap and worthless clips with original German ones and used original German hardware too , it went right to - gether in 20 minutes or so and onto the car easily enough , looks sharp again , I transferred my MERCEDES and 300,000 Mile badge over too along with the OEM made in Turkey star I bought from the local M-B Dealer a few years ago , it's beginning to look dull , apparently they don't base plate the pot metal start like they do in Germany , time to buy another $40 star as soon as I can scrape up the $40 .

We'll see how long it lasts and looks good ~ the chrome surround weighs 1/2 as much as the German ones do so I kept the old still good looking surrounds , I'll see if I can assemble one nice grille out of the pile of old ones and put it on SWMBO's '82 240D soon .

All in all a nice day , I also did a major brake adjust on my Metropolitan Nash Fixed Head Sports Coupe , now I'm sore , took my pain Meds and am ready for bed .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Help finding reasonably priced Becker for '82 300D

Conrad ;

Yes , the W-126 radios pop right in and are somewhat better ~

For $20 shipped don't expect the cassette part to work but they play nicely .

There will be some extra plugs on the back , just ignore them and use the same four wire black MPC and two speaker plugs .

I bet Brian can find you one , we  have to pay more than the E-Bay price but the shipping is dead easy in the U.S.P.S. $10 box .

I like the one with the shiny chrome band across the front , used up to 1986 +/- as it fits and looks very similar with better tuning and tone controls .

Most $1.00 Stores have nifty cassette adapters you can use to play CD's through the earphone jack .

Look closely before buying as the tiny wire needs  to be able to come straight up or the adapter wil jamb in your Becker Grand Prix Electronic , guess how I discovered this ? .

Let me know if you get stuck .

The Becker Europa II radio/cassette player in my '82 300D has been broken for at least the past 8 years (as long as I've owned the car)--both the FM band and the cassette player are dead and non-responsive--and I've finally hit the saturation point of too much A.M. radio religious programming and conservative talk radio.  Even a steady diet of the local all-Indian radio station (all Bollywood, all the time) has gotten old after a while.

I fully realize that the "real" solution is to send out my Becker (which already has an old and peeling Becker remanufactured label on it) to be properly rebuilt, but money is a bit tighter than I'd like at the moment, so that's not an option.  I have a fancier modern receiver/CD player I can install, but I'd rather not chop up the wiring harness or give the local car thieves a reason to discover that one of my doors doesn't actually lock anymore (not a lot of money for non-critical parts at the moment).

Does anyone have a working Becker radio (cassette optional) that they'd be willing to pass along for a reasonable price?  On eBay, I've seen that "as-is" prices for identical early-80s Europa radios with the cassette player can go as low as $20, including shipping, but you have no idea what you're getting.  I also see a lot more Becker Grand Prix radios than the cheaper analog dial Europas--are the connections similar enough that I can just drop a W126 radio into a W123?

Thanks for any help y'all can provide!

Connections: could you Goolge search (not on eBay) to see if the wiring diagrams or connections are similar?
