Re: [diesel_mercedes] Throttle linkage adjust = less power = can't get it back

Here are pics of my 300d's which show the linkage hook ups. Make sure everything got back where it came from.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Throttle linkage adjust = less power = can't get it back

Since making some adjustments (1. linkage, 2. idle speed), I have less than desirable power.
1. For reasons that no longer make any sense, I adjusted my throttle linkage a few days ago, and it really messed things up.
Does anyone happen to have the specks on linkage lengths (available in the Factory Service Manual) or really good advice on how to make it work well?
2. There may be something else up here, too. At the same time I did the linkage, I also raised the idle. So, when I tried to drive the car with both the idle low and the linkage out of whack, I had no power and my shift points were terrible. After I put the idle back and fiddled with the linkage a little, the power got better, but it doesn't hold its speed on cruise control anymore, and it might get stuck going terribly slow (15 mph) up a hill if I come up to a traffic going up hill but then don't have to stop. The RPMs just won't go up, even with the pedal floored (there is no kickdown switch), and downshifting doesn't help.
The car had very good power before I started messing with it and cruise control worked great. What have I done?

Sorry, I was thinking the car info was in my signature, but I don't have a signature in this forum.
It's an '84 300D with 389k miles on it.

Yoou better get one of those electric cars, no black crud. Drove my car to Spokane yesterday, 200 miles, and drove to Colville today 50 miles. 90 degrees both days my AC worked really good. But today my girl went along, 90 outside the car, too cold inside. I just don't get it. But anyway the ac works. Max

[diesel_mercedes] A Big Scare (BE SAFE !)

SWMBO called me on her cell 'phone & I could hear every smoke detector in the house blaring , she was in a blind panic and said the "house is on FIRE ! come quick !" ~ so I hollered at my boss and boogied , when I got there the super fancy microwave oven she'd bought a year ago , had exploded as she was cooking dinner on the gas range below it , luckily one of our Foster boys was there and he ran & brought the big fire extinguisher & shot it at the smouldering oven as she called the fire dept. , they came and unceremoniously ripped it out of the new cabinetry with a pike then carried it out to the front lawn & left .

We're _VERY_ lucky in that little smoke damage was done , there's white powder all over 1/2 the house but no one was hurt (the meat went into the trash bin) and the rest of the kitchen is O.K. , or appears it will be once the cleanup is done .

I've been smelling burnt electrical for over a month now and occasionally this microwave oven would make humming sounds for a while before going silent again but since no one else ever smelled what I did , and the microwave still worked , my warnings were ignored .

Had this happened @ 02:00 , the story might have been very different ending .

BE SAFE ! have a FIRE EXTINGUISHER handy ,a BIG one ,not the $10 cheapy .

[diesel_mercedes] CHUG , CHUG , CHUG..........

Hoo bay ;

So , after I cleaned out my intake screen I left the car until lunchtime and after a nice chicken & beans repast , I hopped on the freeway , flipped on the AC & drove to the Diesel Fuel Station , as I waited for the red light at the end of the off ramp , the car suddenly chugged terribly and nearly stalled before catching again and idling normally ~ the second time it did this , I killed the AC and lightly trod on the foot feed & drove it 1/4 block to the filling station & it idled O.K. in neutral so I popped the hood for a looksee , of course the danged intake screen as merrily bubbling away , I grabbed it and sure enough , I was able to twist the hose to metal inlet pipe connection , I popped the trunk and found only a 1/4 full toolkit , grabbed the factory # 2 phillips and tested the hose clamps , they were tight as they'd go so that means the new German fuel hose I'd installed shortly before my engine blew up a while ago , didn't make it back onto the car .

Grubbing around in my parts box I found several shortish hose bits , some new , some used , all American (fractional not Metric) so I test fitted until I found one that fit snugly and replaced the 1" wrong size hose , about this time a harried looking Asian guy came out of the payhouse and asked me if I would be able to fix it by myself , i said yes and he looked relieved , this is a *very* busy 76 Station on North Broadway in E.L.A. .

I finished up and wiped up the small amount of spilled fuel (happy me , no more crud in the intake screen) , dumped 1/2 a white bottle of Power Service Diesel Treatment with Cetane boost in the tank & filled it up , fired it up and held it to a slightly fast idle for about three minutes as once you let it stall out from air bubbles , it can be a hassle to re start unless you want to unlock & hand prime it , get messy & dirty with Diesel Fuel , I find it simpler & faster to just work carefully instead .

Anyway , after a few minutes it settled down to a smooth idle so I switched on the AC and closed the hood , took a short jaunt on the freeway to make sure it was running O.K. (like a scalded cat with only 1/3 throttle) , everything seems fine again .

Tony , I hear you about the larger intake screen , if ever I see one I'll try it but so far I've just been able to blow them out backwards on the side of the road on those very few occasions they had sufficient fungus to plug up totally .

Like you , I love my 'Benz ~ had this been a Toyletta or Kia , I'd prolly have borrowed a match & burned it on the spot then walked back to work .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Oh , NO !

Nate, a couple of years back I posted a pic of a fuel strainer that I have installed in my 300D, I should have bought more of them, they were $10, each, I put one in my bus, and another in the car. Try truck dealers for a fine mesh fuel strainer, you can clean the screen & it saves the heck out of your fuel filter. You might even install a truck filter, those toy ones that are stock are a bit of a joke, don't get me wrong, I loooove my Mercedes.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Wheel bearings going bad already??

PS - Although I have only had 3 or 4 bad wheel bearings in 50+ years, I have replaced many hundreds of them in various configurations working in an old auto parts machine shop when I was a laddie. Great way to get steelies for kids marble shooters.

What Brian said ! .

After a _proper_ re - packing , assemble the bearings & seal to the hub , slip it onto the spindle and whilst rotating the wheel (or bare rotor) , tighten the lock nut up firmly to seat every thing , then back it off just until it gets loose , then tighten *gently* until you feel resistance indicating zero play , back it off the least bit you can (or to the first available cotter pin hole on old junk) and tighten the adjuster nut's pinch bolt whilst holding it from moving as you snug up the pinch bolt .

It really is simple but take sa fair bit of " feel " to get it ' Just So ' .

Not rocket science, but I do grease them up quite well. I have seen a "proper" write up somewhere where even the amount of grease is measured out. But, a good greasing seems to be a bearings best friend.

[diesel_mercedes] Tranny Shifting & Vacuum

FWIW ;

I like a very firm shift and the proper way to adjust your Mercedes tranny is to attach a vacuum gauge to the modulator line and tweak it as you test drive it, the idea being to make it so there's zero vacuum to the modulator as the accelerator pedal reaches the floor and no more than 15" of vacuum to the modulator at any time .

It's a fine adjustment , simply cutting off the vacuum signal makes it shift with a _BANG_ ~ not a good thing , you want a balance between some vacuum but not very much and zero vacuum and it needs to vary with throttle position , engine speeds and load , tricky stuff to be sure .

Anyways , my 300CD's tranny shifts pretty well but the other day whilst working on the central locking , I noticed the two small vacuum nipples on the primary vacuum pipe , were marked differently ~ one is 0.6 MM and t'other is 0.5 MM ~ not much difference I hear you say but , this tranny shift thing is really persnickity so I swapped the tranny's vacuum hose to the smaller , 0.5 MM nipple and the yellow & green pipes to the 0.6 MM nipple and I was rewarded with firmer shifts _and_ the door lock's come On Line much faster as does the HVAC , due IMO , to a larger volume being transferred in the non tranny vacuum system .

Just a thought and yes , I'm a nut but , this makes sense to me and is working great .
