[diesel_mercedes] RE: heat problems

The heater hoses to the servo as two different sizes to make mis connecting them difficult .

Go to the NAPA store and ask for the heater hot water valve for a base model 6 cylinder 1979 Dodge D-100 pickup truck .

It's about $25 last time I bought one and is cable operated~ the Evil Klima I Servo from ~hell~ controls the fan motor and the various vents too so I hope it's not seized up like most are ~ if it's not you can add this manual hot water valve (it has four nipples like the servo) and a hand cable or go under the hood to adjust the heater temperature .

Next time _ask_ before blindly buying another Mercedes , even if this '77 280 was pristine and only $250 we'd have warned you away from it ~ making the Evil Klima I HVAC system work never costs under $1,000 and always makes you pull your hair out then it only works a couple years before crapping out again .

Consider finding a decent 240D or 300D with the rotary heater knobs , that'll work fine and allow you to enjoy driving an old Mercedes Diesel instead of hating them .

Oh yes ~ to check on the clicking sound , *gently* unplug the wires from the Evil Servor from hell , you have to depress a plastic part carefully before it'll unplug .

If the clicking stops , it needs a new or rebuilt  servo , I'd sell or junk the car instead having been through this .

Can I bypass it?  If so does anyone know which line is in the inlet to the heater core and which is the outlet back to the servo?  There are two parallel attached to the firewall one which is the inlet to the servo.  Then the other parallel one runs to the servo and a third one on the passanger side goes from the firewall to the servo.

Also there is a clicking sound when the air compressor is off.
Guys are always a great help.  Thanks. Mike.

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Tank Service

Yes Brad it is ~

As long as you remember to remove the fuel filler cap first so you don't warp / distort the tank by added pressure .

Then you could remove the tank's fuel outlet and drain it and clean the in tank screen .

Simple if _filthy_ oily dirty work , rewards you with a vastly better running engine 90 % of the time .

Sweating the details like this on old vehicles always pays big dividends .

      Brad Asked :

Is it possible to blow compressed air back through the lines and then pump out the tank?

[diesel_mercedes] Healing Bit By Bit

Yessir ;

I am doing just that ~

To - day I began taking the top end of my beloved 1959 Metropolitan Nash FHC apart to replace all the original soft head studs , water pump and a couple other fiddles .

I discovered the gentleman whom I had ov erhaul the engine for my last year (?) when I wasn't able to , used soft washers on several studs , they deformed and caught in the stud's threads preventing proper clamping of the head gaskey in spite of it being a copper gasket and using Copper Cote spray , it weeped coolant from day one and since I tend to drive the poor little thing hard (typically as fast as it'll go) the weeps got worse until the head gasket failed , no I want to fix it right so I don't have to sweat it .

I worked *very* slowly and carefully , Tom was there in case I had any problems , I didn't and quit after a few hours ~ it's all apart now and I have begun cleaning and prepping the engine , still lots to do before beginning re assembly .

I prefer to take the time to do a good careful job  rather than have to do it again .
