Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: clatter noise. need a hand here.

I ran my intermittent, invisible, hard to locate, loudest noise I ever heard for 1000 or 2000 miles trying to figure out what was going on. Scared me all the time, but those axle joints are big and tough even when dry. Seems that mine were "in balance" around 60mph, or when around town. I might be tempted to go from AZ to Mexico, but I would not go from CA to PA without a fix.

Thanks Brian, sounds like it is the problem.
Course we just pulled in to a hotel in Tucson, and the blooming battery is low, waiting for a tow truck to give us a boost, then hopefully we go & buy a new batt, if it is the alternator, you will hear the swearing all the way to LA.
PS your opinion, can we trust it to hold together for another 2,000 miles, given that it is intermittent, and is silent for 20 to 50 miles, then we stop and it is quiet again.
Tony.

Stop look can find no problems, go again and this repeats over and over. Put the car up on a hoist cannot find any prob. Pull into Los Banos California, pull the passenger side rear wheel, the caliper is sticking, so we replace caliper, do about 50 miles clatter again. Boots on the Passenger side 1/2 shaft are not great, exhaust system donuts are not great, car is overloaded in rear, has all our stuff for Mexico on board. The noise sounds rotational, sounds like it is near rear wheel passenger side, rotor is running cool, drive shaft and rear 1/2 shafts seem ok, no slop or end movement, hub seems ok and is not running hot.

In my life have never seen an intermittent like this, and we are afraid to cross into Mexico with a car that might shut down on the highway. We in Beaumont Ca., a little east of LA and are dazed and confused please if you have any ideas we could really use a clue.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: clatter noise. need a hand here.

Will check lug bolts/brake, but has been good for five years, and why is it not continuos? All your other suggestions were looked at and seem to be in good shape. The one think it aint is obvious - but I bet it is simple once we find it.
Thanks Tony.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: rear suspension rebuild w126.

I would feel wheel after a drive to see if it was hot.Usally that sound is a brake binding. You can measure springs, and purchase coils thru a spped shop. They start at $59 a piece.

..today I noticed what sounds like a rear wheel bearing howling as well.

Guess I'll be puffing the hookah, and doing the whole thing.

>>>Expect a call Monday/Tuesday, Mr. Hanson..

I was hoping to avoid the expense of new springs.. Are they REALLY $400 each!?

The rest, I realize, you get what you pay for.
