[diesel_mercedes] Fungussy / Dirty Fuel Issues

Only those who've been here for several years have even an inkling of what I suffer .

Multiply by 100 and go back to the 1960's ~ I have no idea why I suffer so many dirty fuel problems, no one who's ever worked / traveled with me understands it but they don't doubt it either .

I use it as a learning tool .

Thanx Alan ;

In fact going away from Dino Diesel was the first step in stopping the fungus problem as fungus doesn't grow in it like it does in Din Diesel .

I should have yanked the fuel tank and cleaned it properly at home when first I bought the car but I didn't and now it's near impossible for me to do that .

Did you ever consider that Biomass fuel might be part of you problem?  Why not try running it on real diesel for a while?

So ;

My W123 Coupe has been loping worse and worse at hot idle and smoking (excess fuel) again too *:-S worried .

I drove it to the show shine this morning then home where I did a hot valve adjustment, a thing I don't normally like to do but Mercedes says when you're fighting with problems or the Customer is waiting, it's O.K. to do a hot valve adjustment, just open the valve gaps to .006" intake and .016" exhaust .

Driving home it struggled to reach 105 MPH and never really reached full 82*C operating temp but was plenty hot when I popped the hood so onwards .

Several valves were tighter than cold spec., none were zero lash so that's good .

I carefully adjusted them as necessary then changed the secondary, spin on fuel filter ~ it wasn't filthy inside but rubbing the inside of the filter housing with a clean white napkin resulted in lots of super fine dead black stuff .

The added on micronic paper element filter in the fuel return line was a bit dirty but not like it has been every fillup when I normally change it so possibly I'm nearing the end of this bad fuel problem (possibly) .

I changed it just to be safe .

Then I rigged up a gallon jug of silver bottle Power Service Diesel Kleen to work as a traveling Diesel Purge, adjusted the park brake on Tom's '87 W126 300SDL , cleaned up and headed off, my mangled hand killing me but prolly better for the flexation I gave it working .

I ran out of fuel in South Central Los Angeles (oops) coasted off the freeway and onto a small side street where I wasn't worried about getting hit by passing cars and removed the now empty purge jug, carelssly swapping the fuel feed lines feed for return and so after 400 + strokes of the primer pump and two failed attempts to  start the engine, I reversed the feed hoses and added the spare two gallons of fuel I carry in the trunk, pumped the primer 200 MORE times and after a lot of cranking it lit off, belched a large cloud of brownish fuel smoke *just* as the sun was setting .

Whew .

Boy howdy does my hand hurt *:(( crying .

I know everyone is deathly afraid of South Central L.A. and yes, it's a dangerous place but no one bothered me at all .

The car still lopes a bit at hot idle and smokes from over fueling but is noticeably peppier to throttle response and shifts smoother too .

At this point I'm sure I got screwed by the guy in NC who first lied to then outright cheated me, on the 'rebuilt' injectors I recently bought and installed ~ when I test them I'm willing to bet money they'll all pop off at too low a pressure *X( angry .

Oh well, live and learn .

Except of course, I never learn ~ I trust people to do what they say they're going to do .

When I ran out of the purge fuel the newly installed  paper fuel filter was perfectly clean so I'm guessing the remaining crud is in the tank, a job I hate to even think about in my current health state but I may be forced to remove and clean it properly at home if I see more serious crud in the clear paper return filter .

Stay tuned ~ my plan is to run it close to empty Monday when I return to the Doctor's for more pain filled O.T. fun with my hand, then fill the tank (and the trunk spare can !) with PeroPel biomass Diesel .
