I have been fixing European cars since I was a lad. I am past retirement age and still going at it. I have had cars that really should have been junked and little by little, I made them into usable cars. This one will be no exception. I love learning about the different philosophies of manufacture and function. This is a great car. Will be even better when I am done.

Anything would be better than a white lump stuck at my work. I have been around far worse cars than this one. I have never really hated any of them.

In any case prolly one failed and that kills the entire set on your earlier car .
All indications point to this. I always started on 3 and caught the 4th in a few turns.

It's simple and cheap to up grade to the parallel typ .
Got 'em. Just need to make up some jumpers.

Your car uses the black GP relay under the hood on the forward end of the left inner fender .
No, it has the can under the dash.

It has an (?) 80 ampere strip fuse that rarely blows but occasionally gets loose or corroded .

What is the best way to determine where the open circuit is, or whether
my relay went south? I have one of the pricey metal can ones under the
dash. If it's dead, how easy is it to convert to a new style relay? I am
going to put fast glow plugs in anyways.

Today I had time to do some preliminary checks. terminal 4 on the relay is the switched input through, I thing, fuse 14. Fuse was good and I did find 12 volts when the key was on. I pried the relay open and found it to be in visibly good condition. Points were bent, so I straightened them just a little, but no arcing or pitting. I saw the light flicker a few times as I fiddled.
Would dead glow plugs cause no light? Big fuse is intact, but looks old. When I go to the pencil glow plugs, I will put a new one in.

I took my old one apart again tonight. I discovered that the contacts on the float are held against the wire by a thin metal finger. They are very hard to see, particularly when everything is black from fungus and of course, my fast aging eyes. If they are not routed correctly, that would obviously cause wonky readings.
The wires were not strung through the apertures between the contacts and the pressure fingers. I moved the float about halfway and carefully pulled the wires and reran them between. I'll bet they get this way after being shipped and repeatedly dropped. The center rod prevents the float from moving any direction other that up and down and little harm comes from it slapping up and down while in shipment, but the wires are free to move and just the right hit would surely bounce them out of position.
In short, there are two contacts per wire and the string slips between them.

[diesel_mercedes] The Last Few Months

I crashed my Moto on 6/26, remember ? .

I survived, it didn't .

I go back to see the hand Dr. on Monday 9.25 to see if the bridge and hopefully two large metal supports are ready to be removed from my arm .

I sure hope so .

My left fingers remain bent no matter how much painful flexation exercises I give them and the skin on my left wrist is beginning to get lesions   so the O.T. Therapist to - day said no more closed wrist support inside and made me a moulded thing with elastics that press my knuckles down, we'll see how that works out .

I'm fine and happy to be alive, I've had chronic pain from previous injuries for decades but this one is bad, really bad .

Worse of all, I cannot touch my tools nor RIDE MY DARN MOTO (yes, I have spares) .

Life is good, Great Grandson Kai has been with us all week, he's 2 YO  and learning, always learning .

I managed to make it to my own house yesterday (ow) and spent the whole day lying on my bed reading, my pup Gizmo came in the open back door and gathered up some clean undies, made a bed at the foot of my bed and snoozed ~ when I got up for a kidney break and discovered this I got some clean towels and made him a proper bed to lie in . I wish I'da gotten a photograph as he looked so relaxed and cute lying there .

He's close to 20 years old and is still happy and healthy .

Can't climb into my recliner tho .
